Watch a new trailer for the scary-as-hell sci-fi movie Morgan

#artificialintelligence

Morgan is the debut directorial effort from Ridley Scott's son Luke Scott, a sci-fi thriller that's being promoted with a new trailer running in advance of Independence Day: Resurgence. Who -- or what -- is Morgan, exactly? She's an artificial being that's evolving more rapidly than her creators can comprehend, and she's not responding to continued confinement very well. What middle schooler wants to be locked in their room all day? She doesn't even have a computer or a game console in there.)

Meet the Smartest, Cutest AI-Powered Robot You've Ever Seen

Not in that gadget-y way, like when a laptop screen turns on, though. The robot slowly raises its head and opens one eye, then the other, as if the light of the world is just too much. Sofman, CEO of robotics company Anki, chuckles as the it shakes off the rust of sleep and ambles off its charging cradle. After circling the table a moment, it drives quickly to the edge. It only pauses once it's driven halfway off.

Meet Cozmo, Anki's bid to make AI machines rise up

#artificialintelligence

Cozmo is a 179 artificially intelligent robot that can recognize faces and react to human gestures. SAN FRANCISCO โ€“ At first glance, the palm-sized toy on the table looks unexceptional, an odd cross between a bulldozer and a forklift. Except that the toy is snoring. Suddenly, it wakes up, motors over to its human inquisitor and lets out a happy squawk as its digital eyes go wide. Made by Anki, the start-up that has found success with its self-driving Anki Drive racing cars, Cozmo goes on sale today for 179 with orders shipping this fall.

Anki's Cozmo robot is the real-life WALL-E we've been waiting for

While Cozmo sleeps, it snores. The small robot -- shaped like a miniaturized bulldozer with a CRT monitor for a cockpit -- sits in a charging dock, waiting to be awoken. Like Pixar's adorably anthropomorphic WALL-E, Cozmo falls somewhere between a Mars rover and an animated woodland creature. It's lifelike enough to evoke sympathy, but still enough of a toy not to teeter too close to the uncanny valley. With the tap of a smartphone screen, Cozmo comes to life.

Artificial intelligence will take over the world! "There's very smart people, whether it's Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates or Stephen Hawking, who have said, 'Oh my gosh, this is really dangerous,'" Hawkins said. Hawkins stressed that Numenta is specifically trying to reverse engineer only part of the human brain: The neocortex, which is what lets us learn and create a model of the world based on our environments and experiences. "Perfect is boring," Anki CEO and co-founder Boris Sofman said in an interview. "With the cars, the first version was boring because it was too good. With Cozmo, we wanted him to be imperfect. When he goes and fails to do something, that's not a bad thing... As long as you can detect what happens, it's a good opportunity to show off the emotions it generates." Sofman says the company was inspired by how toddler and pets interact with the world.

Jeff Bezos (R), founder and Chief Executive of Amazon.com and owner of The Washington Post, participates in a conversation with Martin Baron (L), executive editor of The Washington Post, during the event'Transformers: Pushing the Boundaries of Knowledge,' May 18, 2016 in Washington, DC. (Photo: Alex Wong/Getty Images) Artificial intelligence (AI) is perhaps one of the most debated and most controversial technologies today. In fact, experts have opposing opinions when it comes to the remarkable advancement and progress of AI technologies. Over the past decade, people have witnessed how the media depicted the rise of artificial intelligence in numerous science-fiction films. But according to AI experts and researchers, the disturbing possibility of artificial intelligence going out of control or turning evil is a thing of the past, citing the fact that AI is only capable of performing very specific tasks. Despite several explanations and discussions regarding artificial intelligence's potential to outwit humans by automating cognitive tasks, the rapid development and evolution of AI have led to concerns over safety and widespread unemployment.

Artificial intelligence will take over the world! Or so we're told by the movies. We're all doomed to become "house cats" if the machines so desire! Or so prominent experts like Elon Musk have warned. Humbug, say Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky.
