Twitter cracks down on trolling after racist and sexist campaign against Ghostbuster actor Leslie Jones
Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display
Flying at 85MPH Isn't Even the Teal Drone's Best Trick
Sure, with a top speed of 85 mph, it is twice as fast as a DJI Phantom 4 and it will leave almost every consumer drone eating its dust. But its appeal goes well beyond air speed. Buying a drone typically means having a specific activity in mind. There are aerial photography drones, racing drones, follow-me around drones--it can all be a little overwhelming, particularly for someone who's new to UAVs. Teal wants to solve this problem with a modular machine you can tailor to suit to your exact needs.
How to write with artificial intelligence -- Deep Writing
In the past few days, I've taught a machine learning algorithm how to write in the style of Harry Potter, Hamilton (the musical), and HBO's Silicon Valley. The mostly non-sensical, occasionally human-like, topically-flavored writing seems to be amusing not only to me, but to many others. Thus, I've made this quick tutorial to teach you how to create your own instances of "Deep Writing". This is not going to be an in-depth description of the underlying technology -- but instead, a step-by-step guide that anybody can follow (even if you have no coding or machine learning experience). Here is a very crude approximation of what is involved in the Deep Writing process. More than anything, this is meant to give you enough intuition and appreciation to follow along with the rest of the tutorial.
Patt Morrison asks: 'The Left Hand of Darkness' author Ursula K. Le Guin
Comic-Con, that massive San Diego convention that spawned an international franchise for fans of sci fi and fantasy comics, films, television and genre books, began in 1970, in the basement of a San Diego hotel. The year before, the singular writer Ursula K. Le Guin had already published the best science fiction novel of the year: "The Left Hand of Darkness," a book not about ray guns or rocket ships, but about other planets, other cultures, other sexualities. As Comic-Con begins yet another flashy fest, one of alternative fiction's true masters -- author of children's books, poetry, novels and nonfiction -- is shaping her forthcoming book, "Words Are My Matter." Worlds too are her subject matter, the deep currents of politics, race, culture, ecology, sexuality -- our own earthly conundrums played out and spun out on alternative worlds. Le Guin's parents were the remarkable Berkeley anthropologists and ethnologists Alfred and Theodora Kroeber, a couple as influential in the field of anthropology as on the imagination of their daughter, and the planets and people of her creation.
How to Build a Play Recommendation Engine for the Avignon Festival with Dataiku DSS
Hi everyone, my name is Clara and I joined Dataiku's data science team a while ago for an internship. Today I'm going to tell you about a project that was inspired by an overheard conversation during lunch: Alivia Smith (who you are already familiar with if you are an avid reader of our blog) was struggling with the schedule of the Avignon Festival, a French theater festival; struggling because there are so many plays and events happening, but no real guide or documentation to help her decide on her schedule. Since we're a great big loving family at Dataiku, and we're always enthusiastic about playing with data, a couple of us data scientists figured we could use machine learning to build a play recommender for her, so she could have insights regarding which plays she might like, based on her tastes and the theater community's appreciation. We computed several recommendations for Alivia using a method known as collaborative filtering. Essentially, she gave us several plays she had already seen and liked, and from those we deduced a list of other plays she may like, with a score (i.e., an estimation of how much she would like them).
Is AI a dude or a dudette?
Sure, Facebook has "M", Google has "Google Now", and Siri's voice isn't always that of a woman. But it does feel worth noting that (typically male-dominated) engineering groups routinely give women's names to the things you issue commands to. Is artificial intelligence work about Adams making Eves? The response to this critique is usually about the voices people trust and find easy to understand. Adrienne LaFrance over at The Atlantic does a good job discussing those points, so go read her article.
The Brain Debate: what are the pros and cons of artificial intelligence? Media The Drum
There are some very good questions being asked about artificial intelligence, and some very good answers on both sides from some very intelligent people. But which do you find more convincing? The Drum presents the case for and against as part of a recently published issue of the magazine, guest edited using AI. PRO: Chris Bishop, director of Microsoft Research in Cambridge, said earlier this year that he believes the hyperbole around the AI risks could jeopardise any future developments that may in fact assist humanity. "Any scenario in which AI is an existential threat to humanity is not just around the corner," he told the Guardian.
Machine Learning in the Enterprise: You Can't Afford to be Wrong
As the final moments of Rutger Hauer's tears in the rain monologue come to a close in Blade Runner, Netflix (or your streaming service of preference) has lined up some recommendations for your next viewing choice. From 2001: A Space Odyssey to The Matrix, the site's algorithms find you similarly cerebral films that you may enjoyโฆor you may not. The stakes are low in this situation. If you end up watching and disliking The Matrix, chances are you won't cancel your monthly subscription; you will simply be more skeptical of Netflix's algorithmic recommendations in the future and continue on with your day as if nothing happened. In the B2C environment, machine learning is a constant presence in the end user's experience.
Meet Cozmo, the little robot pet you can play games with
With that, Boris Sofman pulled a diminutive white toy out of a soft lunchbox, and began showing it off. After a brief introduction, Sofman set the little robot into its charging cradle, at which point it came to life in the way that all living beings recharge: It slept. I could tell Cozmo was sleeping because of the audio that was emanating from the speaker on his head: the sound of snoring. In between the purrs of his breaths, I heard a few seconds of music on what sounded like clarinet and strings. It was an expectant melody, a signal that Cozmo was ready to greet the day.
