[Research] Pac Man Matrices - an interesting new convex subset of stable matrices • /r/MachineLearning
Well, without further investigation I really can't say if this would be useful for the actual use-case described in the website which is system identification. You seem to be more concerned about other use cases for this result and that is fine. It may be elegant but if it excludes a good model for the system I'm actually trying to estimate, what good is a guarantee that my estimation algorithm will converge?? Also in practice I don't think I've ever seen an actual blow up but in system identification some kind of pseudo-Newton algorithm is usually the choice, not gradient descent. Typically the cost function will usually get very steep before actually blowing up due to instability which tends to keep the algorithm away from that region.
Robert Downey Jr offers to voice Mark Zuckerberg's digital assistant
It may be Tesla's Elon Musk who most often invites comparison to Marvel's superhero Iron Man – the alter ego of billionaire inventor Tony Stark – but it is Mark Zuckerberg who might be the first to bring Stark's technology to life. Memorably, the Facebook CEO sets himself annual goals such as learning Mandarin in 2010, eating only meat from animals he killed himself in 2011, or reading two books a month in 2015. In January, the Facebook founder said that his 2016 challenge would be to build an artificial intelligence-based personal assistant for his home. In his Facebook post announcing his aim, Zuckerberg said that "You can think of it kind of like Jarvis in Iron Man." In a Facebook conversation on Thursday, Zuckerberg invited suggestions for who should voice his real-life Jarvis (which, in the Iron Man and Avengers movies, stands for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System). Suggestions included actors Morgan Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch and Paul Bettany – who voices Jarvis in the movies – as well as astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.

It's hard not to love Anki's adorable Cozmo robot
As someone raised on science fiction and the dream of advanced artificially intelligent robots, I couldn't help but fall for Anki's Cozmo. The tiny bot already won me over when I first saw it in action back in June, and since then it's been one of my most anticipated gadgets this year. Having a robot pal with the spunk and wit of a Pixar character simply feels more exciting than the prospect of yet another smartphone. It's bursting with potential, though the high 180 price means it's not for everyone just yet. You might already be familiar with Anki's smartphone-powered remote control cars, but Cozmo is something else entirely.
'Iron Man' wants to voice Mark Zuckerberg's virtual assistant
If you're building Iron Man's virtual assistant, who better to help than Iron Man himself? Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who's been working on the virtual assistant as part of his New Year's resolution from earlier this year, posted on his social network Thursday that he was looking for someone to voice his latest creation. Robert Downey Jr., who famously plays Iron Man in the Marvel Studios franchise, jumped at the chance to contribute. In a response to the Facebook founder, Downey Jr. said he'd "do it in a heartbeat" if the fees go to Paul Bettany, the voice of Iron Man's virtual assistant Jarvis in the hit movies. Not forgoing a chance to further publicize the Marvel universe, Downey Jr. continued saying that Bettany would then have to donate the funds to a charity "of Cumberbatch's choosing." Benedict Cumberbatch plays Doctor Stephen Strange, the latest Marvel superhero set to hit theaters in his own blockbuster film next month, Doctor Strange.
Google hired writers from Pixar and The Onion to make Assistant more personable
Google wants its Assistant to be more than just an order-taking robot -- so it hired some clever writers from outside the company to help make it happen. A new story from the Wall Street Journal's Christopher Mims details the advancements of different artificial intelligence devices like Amazon Echo and Google's rival product Home, and how they're comforting for those who live alone thanks to how personable the AI's have become. For Google, that friendly personality is thanks to a team of writers from Pixar and The Onion who helped make the Assistant -- which powers Google's Home device -- sound more like a human and less like a robot, according to the Journal. Google's eventual goal is to help users build an emotional connection with the Assistant, the Journal reports. Google unveiled its Assistant-enabled Home device last week, a direct competitor to other AI-powered hardware devices like Amazon's Echo.

Flipboard on Flipboard
Cotton ball spider webs and peeled grape-eyeballs, begone! Because this year, the hottest new Halloween decoration is set to be the "Trumpkin," or a pumpkin carved in striking resemblance to none other than Donald Trump. Is the life of a fashion editor all front-row seats and Instagram perfection? Well, yes and no, as Marie Claire U.S.'s editor-in-chief Anne Fulenwider told us. Yes, it's glamorous, but it also means "putting your hair back in a ponytail, rolling up your sleeves, editing stories, and meeting with … Flipping posts, videos, images and more into Flipboard Magazines allows bloggers to show off passions that reach far beyond what's covered on their blog's niche. He showed us that just because music was innately physical did not mean that it was anti-intellectual."
HP cuts up to 4,000 jobs worldwide
US computer company HP Inc has said it expects to cut 3,000 to 4,000 jobs over the next three years. The hardware business of the former Hewlett-Packard announced the plans as part of a larger restructuring effort. It is hoped the cuts will generate some 200m ( 163m) to 300m in annual savings for the firm, but they are expected to cost up to 500m in charges. HP also issued a lower-than-expected earnings guidance for next year. The company said it expected adjusted profit for the fiscal year 2017 to be between 1.55 and 1.65 per share.
