Cinematography on the fly

MIT News

But a team of researchers from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and ETH Zurich hope to make drone cinematography more accessible, simple, and reliable. Then, on the fly, it generates control signals for a camera-equipped autonomous drone, which preserve that framing as the actors move. With our solution, if the subject turns 180 degrees, our drones are able to circle around and keep focus on the face. The researchers tested the system at CSAIL's motion-capture studio, using a quadrotor (four-propeller) drone.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is Transforming Digital Marketing

#artificialintelligence

Every day people use artificial intelligence; most without realizing the amount of impact AI has on their lives. Chances are better than good that you're using AI far more than you realize. Netflix, Google, credit card companies, video games, customer support, social media, and many other industries use AI to streamline their business model and improve the customer experience. This means that businesses large and small need to capitalize on what's quickly becoming a thriving industry. For perspective, the artificial intelligence market is expected to grow from its current $600 million valuation, to over $36 billion in 2025.

Photo Editing Makes People Distrust Social Media, Dating Sites, Report Says

International Business Times

A new survey done by image authenticity app TRUEPIC revealed Thursday said 93 percent of Americans believe that online photos have been edited. Over the past two decades, content has become more visually available and more people follow visual content such as images and videos. At the same time, it is also a fact many, if not most, of the photos posted online have been subjected to some level of editing. On social media and dating sites, this might have been done for making a person appear more visually attractive and vibrant and engaging to the other people. But it seems to be having the opposite effect.

The Force was strong in this robot competition

Robohub

Thursday night, dozens of robots designed and built by undergraduates in a mechanical engineering class endured hours of intense, boisterous, and often jubilant competition as they scrambled to rack up points in one-on-one clashes on special "Star Wars"-themed playing arenas. As has often happened in these contests -- which have been going on, and constantly evolving, since 1970 -- the ultimate winner in the single-elimination tournament was not the one that'd most consistently racked up the highest scores all evening. Rather, it was a high-scoring bot that triumphed when its competitor missed a crucial scoring opportunity because its starting position was just slightly out of alignment. The class, 2.007 (Design and Manufacturing I), which has 165 mostly sophomore students, begins by giving each student an identical kit of parts, from which they each have to create a robot to carry out a variety of tasks to score points. This year, in a nod to the 40th anniversary of the first "Star Wars" film, released in 1977, the robots crawled around and over a replica of a "Star Wars" X-wing Starfighter.

Rocker Chris Cornell of Soundgarden dies at 52, spokesman says

Los Angeles Times

Rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died at age 52, according to his representative. Cornell, who had been on tour, died Wednesday night in Detroit, Brian Bumbery said in a statement to The Associated Press. Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family were shocked by it. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy. With his powerful, nearly four-octave vocal range, Cornell was one of the leading voices of the 1990s grunge movement with Soundgarden, which emerged as one of the biggest bands out of Seattle's emerging music scene, joining the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.

This Is What a True Artificial Intelligence Really Is

#artificialintelligence

To borrow a cliché opening from the last high school commencement or Maid of Honor speech you heard, the dictionary defines artificial intelligence (AI) as 1: a branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers; and 2: the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior. But, do these definitions really explain the difference between an artificially intelligent system and one that's just programmed to be useful? What is "intelligent" behavior or, more specifically, "intelligent human behavior"? For many, the term "artificial intelligence" draws to mind humanoid robots like C-3PO from "Star Wars" or Dolores from "Westworld."

Google I/O 2017: Google Assistant and Google Home

#artificialintelligence

More and more people are using the phrase "Ok Google" to start a conversation to find information or perform actions using the Google Assistant. Launched last fall, the new assistant is already available on over 100 million devices and is rapidly evolving. Today at Google I/O, its creator took the stage to discuss how Google Assistant is expanding its capabilities and reach on smartphones and Google Home. Google Home, a standalone voice activated smart-appliance and speaker, is getting the most attention, with a number of significant improvements on the way. In a few months, Google Home will be able to make hands-free VOIP calls to any phone in the U.S. or Canada for free.

Killer artificial intelligence returns in 'Alien: Covenant'

#artificialintelligence

LOS ANGELES – Modern movie culture would have you believe artificial intelligence is out to kill us all. In "2001: A Space Odyssey," Hal, the AI computer aboard a space flight to Jupiter, develops a mind of its own and turns against the crew. "The Terminator" makes his mission clear in the movie's title. Ava, the pretty-faced android in "Ex Machina," has a killer instinct. David, the pretty-faced android in "Prometheus," also doesn't have the best intentions for human survival.
