Babble-rnn: Generating speech from speech with LSTM networks
There is plenty of interest in recurrent neural networks (RNNs) for the generation of data that is meaningful, and even fascinating to humans. Popular examples generate everything from credible (but fabricated) passages from Shakespeare, incredible (but highly likely) fake-news clickbait, to completely simulated handwritten sentences that shadow the style of the original writer. Such compelling examples demonstrate the power of recurrent neural networks for modelling human generated data, and recreating completely new data from those models. They can be understood by anybody, humanising the world of "AI". Inspired, Consected, sponsored research into the use of machine learning to generate new speech by modelling human speech audio, without any intermediate text or word representations.
NVIDIA Metropolis Is Paving the Way Toward Smarter Traffic NVIDIA Blog
Nobody likes it, but we all have to deal with it. As the world's cities grow more densely populated, scientists and entrepreneurs are looking for solutions to gridlock, pollution and the other byproducts of a world filled with cars. Two sessions at the GPU Technology Conference earlier this month spoke to the role that data, deep learning and intelligent video analytics can play in easing traffic and improving quality of life for city dwellers the world over. Kurtis McBride, CEO of Miovision Technologies, an IVA startup based in Ontario, Canada, spoke to a room full of developers about his company's efforts -- and their 40 percent year-over-year growth -- to make traffic flow a little easier. Miovision's Open City platform gets data from existing city infrastructure and the company's own video cameras, and applies AI to create insights from it.
Siri Speaker To Be Unveiled At WWDC, Apple Already Manufacturing Device Overseas -- Report
Apple has started manufacturing the Siri speaker overseas, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing sources close to the matter. The report comes after KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in May there's a more than 50 percent chance Apple will unveil its Siri speaker at the Worldwide Developers Conference. Tuesday's report said the device will debut as soon as WWDC next week, but the gadget will not be ready to ship until later this year. It was reported earlier this month that Apple employees were testing the Siri speaker in their homes for several months. The device reportedly entered an advanced prototype stage last fall.
New York Times picks an AI moderator over a Public Editor
In a surprising move, the New York Times announced to its staff on Wednesday that it will immediately eliminate the position of Public Editor at its publication. The role will instead be filled by an expanded comments section -- one that is moderated by artificial intelligence. The position of Public Editor is a relatively new one at the venerable news publication. It was created in 2003 in the aftermath of the Jayson Blair plagiarism scandal as a means of facilitating greater transparency and accountability with the paper's subscribers. There have been six such editors in the 14 years since the position's creation, though Liz Spayd, the current (and rather unpopular) editor will be its last.
What do George Orwell and Winston Churchill have in common? A new book has the answer
Beyond membership in the Pantheon of Famous Brits, Winston Churchill and George Orwell would seem to have little in the way of common ground. Orwell was a journalist and novelist. Churchill had money and pedigree; the young Orwell lived on the street and raised his own vegetables during World War II. Churchill's political leanings were conservative; Orwell flirted with communism until he witnessed the betrayal of his Republican comrades by Soviet agents in the Spanish Civil War. In "Churchill & Orwell: The Fight for Freedom," Thomas E. Ricks gets beyond these differences and finds the iron core of both men.
11 Interesting Examples of How to Use Chatbots
Want to order pizza, schedule a meeting, or even find your true love? Just as apps once were the hot new thing that would solve whatever problem you had back in 2009, now we're moving into the age of chatbots. Chatbots make life even easier for consumers. With chatbots, there's no more long waits on hold to talk to a person on the phone or going through multiple steps to research and complete a purchase on websites. Millions of people already get it.
Mobile phones could soon work properly on London Underground
Tube users could soon get phone signal underground, it's been reported. TfL is said to be in talks with telecommunications groups, and could offer full mobile coverage on London Underground after next week's general election. Commuters can already access the internet on sections of the tube network by connecting to Virgin Media's Wi-Fi service, but it isn't especially practical. DJI Spark hand gestures work -- but not always
The new DJI Spark drone says it responds to hand gestures for flights. How easy is it to master? Jefferson Graham takes it out for a first flight to find out on #TalkingTech. Over the weekend, I took the DJI Spark out to the beach, performing a series of exercises to control the $499 device that made me look like I was either Jedi master or Tai Chi practitioner. With the force of my hand wave, I could control a digital device -- a magical feeling. Often, the Spark worked as advertised.
Take Artificial Intelligence home
Anthropocentrism is not a new trend. For thousands of years, we were convinced humankind was the only reason why the Earth moves around the Sun and why all of the other species even exist. Some of us still believe it is true, the rest of the population are becoming more and more aware of a new form of intelligence that threatens our future -- a form we have designed and built ourselves -- the Artificial Intelligence. When discussing AI, people tend to focus on robots taking over jobs and machines driving cars and killing innocent passersby, the reality, however, is nowhere near as tragic. The very reason AI is growing so fast is to make life easier as modern times are all about convenience.
Kodi: Three add-ons and repositories shut down by anti-piracy group
Three Kodi repositories and add-ons have been shut down after being targeted by an anti-piracy group in Israel, it's been reported. They all stopped operating this week after the group, Zira, threatened them with legal action. Though Kodi isn't illegal, people can use third-party add-ons built by developers to access illegal streams for sports events, films and TV shows through the software.
