AI: The Future Of Digital Marketing (And Everything Else)

#artificialintelligence

The idea of artificial intelligence (AI) has been around for decades, and from movies to games, has now found a home in the mainstream. We are not yet at the point where computers are starting to plot the overthrow of humanity, but through AI, computers are beginning to understand our fellow human beings better than we may understand ourselves. At least, advertising and marketing platforms that integrate AI into their processes are crunching numbers much faster than we ever could, and deriving insights that marketers use to better target and understand the end user and consumer. Starting simple with AI technologies, there are recommendation engines: "Early low-hanging fruit for brands to harness the power of AI is in content discovery," Glenn Hower, senior analyst at Parks Associates, told attendees at the "A.I. Meets Media: Innovation Summit" presented by Ooyala.

At Qucit we use geographic data collected from hundreds of cities on a daily basis. It is collected from many different sources, often from each city's open data website and used as inputs to our models. We can then predict parking times, bikeshare stations occupations, stress levels, parking fraudโ€ฆ Gathering it is a lot of fastidious work and we aim at automating it. In order to do so we want to get our data from a source available everywhere: satellite images. We now have a good enough precision to detect roads, buildings and we believe that single trees can be detected too. We tested our model on the SpaceNet images and labels, acquired thanks to the Spacenet Challenge. During this challenge the Topcoder Community had to develop automated methods for extracting building footprints from high-resolution satellite imagery. Non Intrusive Load Monitoring is the field of electrical consumption disaggregation within a building thus enabling people to increase their energy efficiency and reduce both energy demand and electricity costs. We will present to you this active research field and what are the learning challenges @Smart Impulse.

An Introduction to Algorithms

#artificialintelligence

In the modern world, algorithms do much of the digital heavy lifting. Algorithms control the inner-workings of everything from particle accelerators to stock markets. They determine the news you see, what search results you get, how computers learn, and what gets recommended to you on Netflix or Amazon. In short, society couldn't function as-is without algorithms โ€“ and as we lean on them to run more things, it becomes more important for us to learn what they are and what they do. An algorithm is a predetermined set of steps for a computer to accomplish a task.

[P] Draw Together with a Neural Network โ€ข r/MachineLearning

I find it pretty humbling if this is really as good as it gets (i.e. Brain compute endless data) even when generating such simple stuff and having all stroke data. The interpolation and predictor experiments feel like recalling brute-force memorized patterns and not really like a system that has learned something general about the world. Also the fact that one has to choose a class makes me suspicious how bad things would look without this "feature".

The history and potential of deep learning Thomson Reuters

@machinelearnbot

There are a few moments in the history of artificial intelligence (AI) that are considered major breakthroughs โ€“ events that showed the power of machine intelligence in matching or surpassing human performance. Two examples are Deep Blue versus Kasparov in 1997 and Watson versus Jennings in 2008. Most recently, AlphaGo versus Lee Sedol became another major victory, this time driven by a fast developing field known as "deep learning." Deep learningโ€“a machine learning technique based on artificial neural networksโ€“is growing in popularity due to a series of developments in the science and business of data mining. Prior to AlphaGo's victory over the currently best Go player Lee Sedol, computer programs that played Go had only been able to beat average players.

iOS 11 preview: Full of promise, especially on bigger screens

Engadget

As always, Apple spent a considerable chunk of WWDC earlier this month hyping up iOS 11 and all of the new features it brings. Now it's your turn to take them for a spin. The first public release of the iOS 11 beta goes live today for people participating in Apple's testing program, and we've been playing with it for a few days to help get a better sense of what it has to offer. Long story short, it's already shaping up to be a very valuable, very comprehensive release. In order to find out for yourself, you'll need the right hardware: an iPhone 5s or newer, an iPad mini 2 or newer, or a sixth-generation iPod touch.

The first machine to study the Dance Dance Revolution video game now choreographs its own dances

@machinelearnbot

Dance Dance Revolution is one of the classic video games of the late 20th century. A testament to its success, novelty, and longevity is that it is still popular today, almost 20 years since its launch. This is a dancing game consisting of a screen and a dance platform that players control with their feet. The platform has four pads, which players must touch to music in the order specified by a chart on the screen. So players must dance to the music in the way the game demands.

Amazon Echo Show review: Showing (often) better than telling

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

You can make video calls through Echo Show. NEW YORK--Alexa can show you stuff as well as tell. You and Amazon's cloud-based personal assistant have been on a first name basis ever since the debut of the company's popular voice-driven Echo speaker. Now that Amazon will begin shipping Echo Show this week, the first Echo with a built-in screen, I can not only envision how you and Alexa might spend more time together, but how Alexa might bring you closer to family and friends. Chief reason: merely by asking, Alexa can initiate video calls, including a special type of "drop in" call reserved for loved ones, of which I'll have more to say below. I've been testing Echo Show for just shy of a week and expect it to be a hit, as much for its potential as for where it will be on launch day.

TIME

It's the first time Alexa, the virtual assistant powering Amazon's Echo devices, doesn't depend solely on verbal input. I can't glance at my nightstand without Alexa feeding me news headlines, recommending music videos, or encouraging me to try its other features. As such, it's possible to place a video call, audio call, or send an audio message just by asking Alexa. Amazon is positioning the Show as more than just a Skype machine by making it compatible with smart home products like baby monitors and security cameras.
