Artificial Intelligence Explained Part 1 – Towards Data Science – Medium

#artificialintelligence

I wanted to write a few posts explaining the'magic' behind artificial intelligence for people who like me aren't math or programming geniuses. This is the first post in the series that will start from the beginning assuming little-to-no knowledge of what A.I is. Google has a pretty good definition of what A.I is: However, one misconception people often have is that all A.I is artificial general intelligence. What is Artificial General Intelligence? Essentially, AGI is the A.I you see in the movies, A.K.A fully sentient beings that are usually hostile towards the human race .

How artificial intelligence is changing lives

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a real and growing part of our lives. From voice-controlled assistants to online ordering to self driving cars in development, AI is the brains behind computer software. As it improves computers, making them faster and smarter, is this technology a threat? "I wouldn't see it as a threat, necessarily," Recode reporter April Glaser told CNBC's "On the Money" in an interview. Glaser covers robots, drones and other smart machines for the technology news website.

But a widely publicized new memoir about America's covert drone war fails to mention the "outflow increases," as one internal Air Force memo calls it. One might ask Velicovich to explain the deaths of Warren Weinstein, an American citizen, and Giovanni Lo Porto, an Italian citizen -- both aid workers who were killed by an American drone strike that was targeting Al Qaeda members in Pakistan. In the acknowledgments section of the memoir, Velicovich mentions that the forthcoming movie will be directed and produced by Michael Bay, the filmmaker behind "Transformers," "Pearl Harbor" and "Armageddon." Alex Edney-Browne (@alexEdneybrowne) is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, where she is researching the psycho-social effects of drone warfare on Afghan civilians and veterans of the U.S. Air Force's drone program.

We're all cyborgs, and AI assistants will make us more human

#artificialintelligence

In the classic 1980s dystopian sci-fi movieRoboCop, mortally wounded Detroit police officer Alex Murphy is reborn as a cyborg when his brain is implanted in a fully mechanical body. He comes back better and stronger than ever, so good at his job that later in the film, his fellow human officers go on strike to protest robots taking their jobs. Being part man and part machine, Murphy melds the street smarts and instincts of a human officer with the strength, stamina, and durability of a machine to become a more effective cop. We're not particularly close to having the technology that would make that kind of robot-human hybrid possible, but what if I told you we'realreadycyborgs? It's true. Humans have been using technology to augment our biology for millennia, and AI is going to accelerate this trend.

How Valve inspired Neill Blomkamp to start his own movie studio

Engadget

Neill Blomkamp has a question: "If you could break apart films and treat them a little bit more like software, what would that look like?" Whether it's blindly following Amazon Instant recommendations or waiting for a film to hit Netflix instead of buying it, video streaming has slowly ushered in a new cinematic landscape; the way we consume movies has changed drastically. Yet despite the impact of the internet on movie-watching, filmmakers' haven't truly changed their creative process. Cult sci-fi director Blomkamp wants to do exactly that. After District 9, Elysium and Chappie, the director set up Oats Studio, which has just released three short films -- Firebase, Rakku and Zygote (collectively titled Volume 1).

6 AI-enabled gadgets that are actually helpful

#artificialintelligence

Now in its early stages, artificial intelligence is on the cusp of going mainstream. There are some cool AI-based gadgets and apps on the market, but the next step in AI's evolution is the development of gadgets that are useful in day-to-day life. This doesn't necessarily mean "smart" -- just practical. While AI will no doubt continue to improve as technology progresses, there are a handful of helpful devices and gadgets you can get your hands on now. Here is a quick look at six of the best.

4 fears an AI developer has about artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

As an artificial intelligence researcher, I often come across the idea that many people are afraid of what AI might bring. It's perhaps unsurprising, given both history and the entertainment industry, that we might be afraid of a cybernetic takeover that forces us to live locked away, "Matrix"-like, as some sort of human battery. And yet it is hard for me to look up from the evolutionary computer models I use to develop AI, to think about how the innocent virtual creatures on my screen might become the monsters of the future. Might I become "the destroyer of worlds," as Oppenheimer lamented after spearheading the construction of the first nuclear bomb? I would take the fame, I suppose, but perhaps the critics are right.

What will business technology look like tomorrow?

#artificialintelligence

IN 2014 Andrew McAfee and Erik Brynjolfsson of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published "The Second Machine Age". The book was a balanced portrait of how new digital technologies were poised to improve society, even as they increased unemployment and depressed wages. In their latest work, "Machine, Platform, Crowd", the authors seek to explain the business implications behind these developments. Mr McAfee and Mr Brynjolfsson believe that the latest phase of computers and the internet have created three shifts in how work happens. The first is artificial intelligence (AI): a move from man to machine.

A.I. Is Getting Scary Good At Mimicking Us

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence, more commonly referred to AI, is changing the game for many industries. From healthcare to finance, AI is revolutionizing the way we go about our day-to-day lives. However, it isn't just major industries that are influenced by the developments in artificial intelligence. With the direction things are moving, AI may also affect the everyday person more than we think. While we struggle with an influx of fake news, AI could take that to an entirely different level.
