Bringing deep learning to big screen animation
Modern films and TV shows are filled with spectacular computer-generated sequences computed by rendering systems that simulate the flow of light in a three-dimensional scene and convert the information into a two-dimensional image. But computing the thousands of light rays (per frame) to achieve accurate colour, shadows, reflectivity and other light-based characteristics is a labour-intensive, time-consuming and expensive undertaking. An alternative is to render the images using only a few light rays. That saves time and labour but results in inaccuracies that show up as objectionable "noise" in the final image. UC Santa Barbara electrical and computer engineering Ph.D. student Steve Bako and his advisor, Pradeep Sen, are advancing on a solution.

Learning from data: Building brains โฆ and using them Thomson Reuters
We like our machines to feel human, even if they don't look it. The pulsing on and off of the power light on an Apple computer when it is "sleeping" is reassuring. Even the red light of HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey gave an assurance that the machine was alive, rather than a faceless menace. One of the pioneers of computing, Alan Turing, was amongst the first to address the challenge of artificial intelligence and gives his name to the Turing test for a "machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human." Learning from our mistakes makes us human.
CGI and AI Will Empower Fake News โข LiketheFuture
Late last year, some WikiLeaks supporters were growing concerned: What had happened to Julian Assange? The then-45-year-old founder of the anti-secrecy publisher was no stranger to controversy. Since 2012, he has sheltered in the Ecuadorian Embassy in Knightsbridge, London, following allegations of sexual assault. But the publication of leaked emails from Democratic Party officials in the run-up to the US presidential election saw Assange wield unprecedented influence while at the center of a global media firestorm. After the election, though, suspicions were growing that something had happened to him.
Can data predict fashion trends?
IN THE film "The Devil Wears Prada", the character of Miranda Priestly, whose role is based on a feared Vogue editor, scolds her new assistant for not understanding fashion. Fashion, she tells her, is whatever a select group of designers and critics says it is. What she does not say, however, is that their judgments are themselves often influenced by another group: fashion forecasters, who predict what will be "in". Might these seers of style in turn be undone by artificial intelligence (AI)? Fashion forecasting has always been a peculiar profession. The business came into its own in Paris in the 1960s when agencies began releasing "trend books", collections of fabrics and design ideas.
'The Emoji Movie' Lost Its Zero Percent Rotten Tomatoes Score
"The Emoji Movie" succeeded from its zero percent score on Rotten Tomatoes Friday after one reviewer gave the film a certified-fresh review, bumping its score up to 3 percent. Betsy Bozdech is the first critic to give the movie a positive review. The reviewer responsible for the boosted score hails from Common Sense Media, claiming the 3D computer-animated comedy flick "isn't bad, but it isn't great, either. Common Sense Media aims to educate parents with quality reviews on the latest media and technology arrivals. The review on the Sony-Columbia Pictures collaboration evaluates the movie's educational value, positive messages, positive role models and language, among other factors. Bozdech came to the conclusion that the film's overall message "emphasizes the importance of being true to yourself, as well as the value of honesty and teamwork." Bozdech also cited the movie's protagonist Gene, voiced by "Silicon Valley" alum T.J. Miller, as a good role model for children viewers. "Gene starts out desperate to fit in and do what he's'supposed' to do, but he learns that his ability to be many things is what makes him special -- and he can be useful by being himself," she wrote. "Gene's parents love him, but at first they're also a bit embarrassed by him and his differences.
Musk, Zuckerberg clash over future of artificial intelligence
This combo of file images shows Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, left, and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. An online smackdown between tech titans Zuckerberg and Musk over the possible threat of artificial intelligence underlines how little most people know about the rapidly advancing technology. Two of the technology industry's most powerful leaders are at odds when it comes to artificial intelligence. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has a pessimistic view of the risks associated with such technology. "I keep sounding the alarm bell," Musk told the National Governors Association in June.
What we're watching: 'Shirobako,' 'American Gods' and 'Robot & Frank'
Welcome once again to Video IRL, where several of our editors talk about what they've been watching in their spare time. This month brings a mixed bag; while one of us dived into season one of Starz' series American Gods; another is obsessed with a quirky UK game show that will make the jump to America soon; we've given anime another chance and last but not least, there's even some robot-enabled larceny. A decade after slowly drifting away from watching anime as a genre, I've somehow found myself with a Crunchyroll Premium subscription. It started when my wife wanted to watch the 2014 Sailor Moon reboot, continued as we stumbled into the addictive absurdity of Food Wars and became a paid subscription somewhere between starting Rin-ne and catching up on new episodes of Dragon Ball Super. Somehow, we became anime fans again. It's good to be back, too -- but it's not the high-profile, weekly simulcast adventures of Goku that keep me coming back to the anime streaming service.
Allegis Group Study Outlines Status of HR-Related Artificial Intelligence Initiatives
"We're still in the early stages of understanding how AI will displace old jobs and create new ones. Without question, though, it will have a major impact on how companies compete for talent and get work done," says Andy Hilger, president of Allegis Group. "Innovations in AI will become more and more integral to business success, impacting strategic priorities, technology adoption, and, maybe most important, the overall evolution of the workforce. Our industry, as well as the clients and talent with whom we partner, needs to understand the implications and have a plan to capitalize on what will be a disruptive force." HR Professionals Take Stock of AI When asked to identify areas of talent management that will benefit from AI, top responses from HR professionals surveyed included training talent (26%), screening talent (24%) and workforce planning (22%).
