Imposing higher-level Structure in Polyphonic Music Generation using Convolutional Restricted Boltzmann Machines and Constraints
Lattner, Stefan, Grachten, Maarten, Widmer, Gerhard
Since computers can automate such processes, automatic music generation has become a small, but steadily emerging field in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Nevertheless, automatic music generation as a problem is far from solved: musical outputs created by artificial systems are regarded as a curiosity by human listeners at best, but all too often they are taken as a direct offense to our sense of musical aesthetics. This sensitivity to violations of even the most subtle musical norms illustrates how complex the problem of (especially polyphonic) music generation is. In addition, there are hardly any objective evaluation criteria to rigorously test and compare music generation systems. This is lamentable, not least since successful methods for automatic music generation would be of considerable commercial interest to the music, gaming, and film industries.
I'm Sick and Tired of Hearing about "Killer Robots"
If you've seen the movie "Snakes on a Plane," you'll recall the scene where Samuel L. Jackson uses some colorful language to describe how fed up he is with all the snakes on that plane. While I'm going to use less colorful language here, substitute "killer robots" for "snakes" and "the conversation about AI" for the word "plane," and you'll understand how I feel. Even if you haven't seen it, you get the idea. In recent weeks, Elon Musk has once again sounded the alarm and drawn others into the discussion about the dangers of AI. While I have great respect for Musk, I feel he is actually doing the industry a disservice.
Dating app Badoo adds video chat to help you filter out creeps
Dating apps have been slow to adopt video functionality. Big shot Tinder bought a video service in February but hasn't announced plans to add its functionality, while Hinge just included user-made movie clips for profiles -- a feature that Badoo launched last year. Today, the UK-based dating service is taking another step forward and adding video chat straight into the app, so users can move past text and talk in real-time. You'll have to exchange at least one message each before video chats become available, so at least users won't get spammed with calls from randos they haven't chatted with. Badoo is pitching it as an added layer of security, giving folks the opportunity to see if anybody sets off their creep alarms before meeting in person.
Mastercard Enhances Artificial Intelligence Capability with the Acquisition of Brighterion, Inc.
This acquisition will further expand its suite of capabilities that deliver an enhanced customer experience and security. Artificial intelligence plays a critical role in enabling consumer convenience, while delivering enhanced security. This advanced technology delivers greater insights from every transaction to assist in making even more accurate fraud decisions. "To fully realize the promise of our increasingly digital lives, we need to design our payment systems with the future in mind and that's what we're doing," said Ajay Bhalla, president of enterprise risk and security for Mastercard. "Our unprecedented use of artificial intelligence on our network is already proving successful. With the acquisition of Brighterion, we will further extend our capabilities to support the consumer experience."
5 Types of Recommenders
Summary: There are five basic styles of recommenders differentiated mostly by their core algorithms. You need to understand what's going on inside the box in order to know if you're truly optimizing this critical tool. In our first article, "Understanding and Selecting Recommenders" we talked about the broader business considerations and issues for recommenders as a group. In this article we'll cover the five basic types of recommenders and their strengths and weaknesses. Given that Recommenders add 10% to 25% of incremental income to your ecommerce business you need to know exactly how these are working. Optimization will involve fine tuning as well as potentially combining different models.

See the included notebook for a detailed explanation and implementation. The model is implemented in Keras/Tensoflow, and is trained on data from 22 3d movies, sampled at 1 fps. Validation is perfomred on 3 held out movies. The total number of stereo frame is about 125K, training took 4 days on a gtx 1070 with batches of 6 stereo images with resolution 192x336 per eye.
Real Business - Are businesses ready for automation, robots and artificial intelligence? 15 August 2017
This article was first published in Real Business. As the Taylor report on employment in the modern economy highlighted, our workplaces are changing rapidly. And some of the biggest drivers of that change are automation, robots and artificial intelligence. The arrival of business-orientated automation, robots and artificial intelligence can take on tasks we thought only humans could โ but it will present real challenges. There will be a very direct impact on some individuals who will need to acquire different skills or will have to face the harsh reality of ceasing to be employable. That means employers will need to re-think current approaches to talent identification, training and workforce planning.
'Westworld' Season 2 Spoilers: Creators Reveal Biggest Misconception About HBO Show
People love forming theories about HBO's sci-fi show "Westworld," and many are so good at it that creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are worried that they might spoil future storylines for other fans. However, there are a good number of theories as well that are wrong. Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter that the biggest misconception about the show is that "it takes place in the future." "We had some pretty frightening conversations about [artificial intelligence] with people who have a front-row seat to what's happening. We've all thought about this subject as science fiction for so long that it's hard to understand it's happening -- right now," he explained.
