Explainer: What is artificial intelligence? - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence has jumped from sci-fi movie plots into mainstream news headlines in just a couple of years. And the headlines are often contradictory. AI is either a technological leap into greater prosperity or mass unemployment; it will either be our most valuable servant or terrifying master. But what is AI, how does it work, and what are the benefits and the concerns? AI is a computer system that can do tasks that humans need intelligence to do. "An intelligent computer system could be as simple as a program that plays chess or as complex as a driverless car," Mary-Anne Williams, professor of social robotics at the University of Technology, Sydney, said.

'We can't protect workers at the cost of progress'

#artificialintelligence

The future of labour cannot involve protecting workers against disruption at the expense of new business models, Second Minister for Manpower and Home Affairs Josephine Teo said yesterday. Businesses and governments must work together to allay workers' concerns and make sure employees are able to take up the new jobs that will be created from automation and digitisation. "The catch is that the prospect of a net addition of jobs is comforting only to the extent that the workers involved can find ways to access the new opportunities," she said. "Otherwise, it is a frightening thought, and you could have a very unhappy situation where unemployment is rising and yet, at the same time, businesses are growing below potential." Mrs Teo, who is alsoMinister in the Prime Minister's Office, was speaking at the conclusion of the Milken Institute Asia Summit as part of a panel on preparing for jobs some two decades down the road.

Will AI kill us all after taking our jobs?

@machinelearnbot

Preface: Lately we hear too many news about Artificial Intelligence (AI). Google, IBM, Apple, Microsoft etc. years ago announced "mobile" support. Today, mobile is obvious, and to differentiate, they claim to use "AI". The word "AI" for most people can be only the sci-fi movies AI, since we get too many AI movies too: Her, Ex Machina, … and even "Alien: Covenant" is about a rogue AI, the aliens are secondary. Companies went mobile for real: their services run in cell phones. But, we don't see sci-fi "AI" in any service like Alexa, Cortana, Siri etc.

#artificialintelligence

Most of you already know that AI has become a big driving force in many industries – and sales is no exception. While everyone has seen how AI can help find directions on their next road trip, discover their next favorite artist or deliver a new Netflix binge-watch, few of us understand how AI is also reshaping the B2B world – specifically, sales. A B2B sales professional will never be replaced with a chatbot – still, there is evidence showing that AI is already starting to make an impact. Harvard Business Review shared that sales and marketing teams are already starting to use AI in several day-to-day applications. And as innovations in this area continue to grow, these trends show no signs of slowing down.

Quickprop: an almost forgotten neural training algorithm • r/MachineLearning

@machinelearnbot

You must define the global loss L and then consider only the gradient relative to the connection between neuron i and neuron j for each layer. For example: if you have 3 layers (0, 1, 2) and 3 is an output neuron, you must consider the total loss L (computed with the output) and for each update, let's say Layer1-Neuron3 and Layer 2-Neuron2, you have to compute the gradient dL/dW13-22 (relative to the synaptic weight that connects the neurons). I know it's difficult to write here, however the process is very simple.

Machine Learning Undergraduate Intern positions? • r/MachineLearning

#artificialintelligence

Been trying really hard to get a position at any company for intern positions for machine learning as an undergraduate but companies just don't seem to care. It seems like every intern position in machine learning is limited to people with masters or PhD positions. Is there any way for an undergraduate to really bag a position for ML? P.S if you're hiring machine learning undergraduates, I'd be more than happy to send my resume over!

Artificial intelligence is writing the next 'Game of Thrones' book

#artificialintelligence

Winter is kind of here. "Game of Thrones" fans have grown so impatient for George R.R. Martin to finish the next "A Song of Ice And Fire" book – the series that the HBO show is based on – that an artificial intelligence system just wrote the beginning of the sixth book. Zack Thoutt, a "GoT" fan and software engineer, created a type of AI, known as a recurrent neural network. Thoutt fed the machine all 5,376 pages of the five current books and it generated predictions on what will happen next. While the AI's effort is definitely not a Martin novel, the sentences are mostly easy to understand and the predictions reportedly align with some popular fan theories.

AI and a Human Make a Pop Record... For Real

Southern says the company told her she was the first artist using it for songwriting as far as they knew, and they've been learning about their own program from what she's doing with it. One obvious question that comes to mind is who exactly owns the Amper-created songs, Southern or Amper? How about Southern and the person/people who wrote the Amper algorithms? When asked about this, Southern laughs, saying, "We are working through those issues." Southern is a self-described "music hacker" who settled on Amper for its high quality after investigating a few other AI-music platforms.

Natural Language Processing Market to Reach $22.3 Billion by 2025

#artificialintelligence

Natural language processing (NLP) is a technology spawned from the need for machines to understand and communicate with humans in human language, not formal computer languages. The concept behind NLP is simple: if and when machines can understand and communicate with humans in natural (human) language, it democratizes data science, enabling humans to access, analyze, and leverage data more intelligently and become more efficient as they offload redundant, data-heavy tasks to machines. According to a new report from Tractica, while NLP is most commonly understood as a user interface (UI) technology, it is also a critical technology for extracting insights and analysis from a vast amount of previously unindexed and unstructured data, mining video and audio files, emails, scanned documents, and more. Tractica forecasts that these expanded applications, leveraging newly developed artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, will drive growth in the NLP software market from $136 million in 2016 to $5.4 billion by 2025. The market intelligence firm anticipates that NLP software deployments will drive significant additional sales of hardware and professional services, bringing the total NLP software, hardware, and services market opportunity to $22.3 billion by the end of the forecast period.

'The Punisher' Will Feature Less Supernatural Elements, More 'Basic Human Emotions'

International Business Times

Netflix's next Marvel TV show is going to be a little different. While The Defenders all have super powers, Frank Castle is a little more ordinary. That means that many parts of the other Marvel shows will not crossover into "The Punisher." "We are stripping down every supernatural element," star Jon Bernthal told Entertainment Weekly. Frank is a character rooted in the most basic human emotions… He's a comic-book character, but he doesn't fly, he doesn't have X-ray vision.
