Apple TV 4K review: Almost perfect

Engadget

The Apple TV 4K is the streaming box we've been waiting for. It brings together the excellent interface from the 2015 model, along with the long-awaited ability to watch movies and TV shows in 4K and HDR. And perhaps most importantly, it seriously drives down the cost of digital 4K releases. Sure, competitors like Roku and Amazon's Fire TV have had 4K/HDR capabilities for years, but Apple's pricing model makes the format more accessible to consumers. While it's not quite perfect, the Apple TV 4K is a solid step beyond HD video.

'Ex Machina' director's next film explores a dreamy otherworld

Engadget

Frequent Danny Boyle film screenwriter Alex Garland's directorial debut, the lauded 2015 sci-fi thriller Ex Machina, was a delightful and discomforting take on humans and the robots they create. His next film Annihilation comes out February 23rd, 2018, but check out its first trailer to see Natalie Portman explore a future United States starting to be overrun by a dreamy, otherworldly wilderness. Annihilation is an adaptation of the first book (of the same name) in the Southern Reach trilogy, an award-winning science fiction series written by Jeff VanderMeer. Portman plays protagonist Lena, a biologist tasked with investigating Area X, a portion of the southern United States cordoned off from the outside world by a strange rainbow-slick membrane. Inside, she delves deeper into a surreal landscape, which may have played a part in her husband's (Oscar Isaac) death after he returned from an expedition into Area X. Tessa Thompson and Jennifer Jason Leigh also star, though they have tragically little screen time in the trailer.

Everything You Need to Watch on TV This Fall--From 'Orville' to 'Punisher'

WIRED

A wonderful time of football, things inexplicably getting pumpkin spice flavoring, and way more new TV than anyone could ever possibly watch. Seriously, there are a gajillion channels and streaming networks now, how can anyone dream of knowing what to turn on? Between all the superheroes, strictly-for-adults animated programs, and 1990s reboots out there it's impossible to keep up. But we have some ideas. Below are WIRED's picks for what you should watch (or at least DVR) this season--and one or two suggestions for what you can easily skip. By far the funniest part of this science fiction adventure comedy is when the opening credits say "created by Seth MacFarlane," because longtime Star Trek fans will immediately recognize everything else as the DNA (and proteins, bones, musculature, and central nervous system) of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Introduction To Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

Why would you want to understand Machine Learning? How does it matter to your life? If you're not a master of it, why do you at least need to understand the basics of Machine Learning? The answer to all these questions is very simple. It's because Machine Learning on a day to day basis is becoming bigger and it is knowingly or unknowingly part of our life and so it is important to know what it is. We'll try to answer all the basic questions related to machine learning in this and the following articles on Machine Learning and at least know what Machine learning is and what could be achieved with Machine Learning.

[R] AdaGAN: Boosting Generative Models, Iliya Tolstikhin (NIPS2017 paper) • r/MachineLearning

#artificialintelligence

Do we really need to have extensive results on MNIST, CIFAR, Imagenet, Celeba, ... to claim that a paper is convincing? This paper addresses a very specific issue of generative models, which is the fact that they mostly fail to demonstrate the same diversity as the original data. Their theoretical claims are clear, and to the best of my understanding, grounded. Their synthetic experiment pinpoints the variability problem of GANs, and demonstrate the superiority of their approach in this particular setup. What would an experiment on Imagenet add to their point?

James Cameron Sounds the Alarm on Artificial Intelligence and Unveils a 'Terminator' for the 21st Century

#artificialintelligence

By all objective measures, The Terminator represents the most feared cautionary tale of modern Hollywood: a broken franchise. Thirty-three years after Arnold Schwarzenegger became an international star playing a killer robot sent from the future to kill the mother of the leader of a postapocalyptic rebellion, there have been four sequels (and one TV series), and the three films without the involvement of creator James Cameron have turned off fans and led the property to bounce from studio to studio and reboot to reboot. Terminator: Genisys, a 2015 installment made by financier David Ellison's Skydance Media (Ellison bought rights from his sister, Megan Ellison, who acquired them in a 2011 auction for $20 million), seemingly, uh, terminated the prospect of future films. But this is Hollywood 2017, and no major franchise is truly dead. Ellison, along with distributor Paramount (Fox has international rights), has persuaded Cameron, who on Sept. 25 began filming four Avatar sequels, to shepherd a new Terminator for the era of Amazon drones, Facebook news bots and artificial intelligence-fueled anxiety. Calling it "a return to form that I believe fans of the franchise have been wanting since Terminator 2: Judgment Day," Ellison, 34, has for the past year worked secretly with Cameron and Deadpool's Tim Miller, who will direct the untitled sequel for a July 26, 2019, release. They assembled a writers room with scribes David Goyer, Charles Eglee, Josh Friedman and Justin Rhodes as well as Ellison, a lifelong Terminator fan (Cameron himself shows up once a week), and have crafted what they want to be a trilogy with Schwarzenegger, 70, and original star Linda Hamilton, 62, passing the torch to a young female lead.

New 'Star Wars Battlefront 2' Trailer Shows All The Maps, Multiplayer Modes

International Business Times

EA has released a new trailer for "Star Wars Battlefront 2" and it appears to confirm all the game modes and maps for the upcoming sci-fi shooter. EA has also released the minimum PC requirements for the upcoming Beta, which will commence next weekend. The brand new trailer for "Star Wars Battlefront 2" is being narrated by actor John Boyega, who plays Finn in "The Force Awakens" and the upcoming "The Last Jedi" films. The five-minute trailer shows off some new footage, as well as some infographics showing that "Battlefront 2" will indeed have three times the number of locations and vehicles of the 2015 "Battlefront" game. The trailer also touts the new single-player campaign mode, which was actually what Boyega was asking from the 2015 game.

[Discussion] Choosing GPU for Machine/Deep Learning • r/MachineLearning

@machinelearnbot

Hello all, my first post here, nice to meet you! I'm working currently as a backend developer, but I have started to read about all this machine learning stuff - it is going crazy all around job markets - and was thinking about switching, as it should not be hard to learn the stuff (I've got math background). I've read that this kind of science use GPUs a lot to speed up the computations. Right now I am about to build a new home PC and I though I could use new GPU not only for games and cracking neighbours wifi password, but also to learn some ML/DL. I have an opportunity to buy AMD rx 580 (8 GB) card with considerable good price (even in the cryptocurrency mining craze) - it seemed to me as a good choice, considering open source drivers (Linux user) and performance.

[P] Video Pixel Networks in Tensorflow • r/MachineLearning

@machinelearnbot

After DeepMind has released the Video Pixel Networks paper I started working on a tensorflow implementation of it on this github repository . I finished it so feel free to check it out. And I also wrote a medium post about the architecture and my implementation details.
