Could AI Be the Future of Fake News and Product Reviews?

When Hillary Clinton's new book What Happened debuted on Amazon's Web site last month, the response was incredible. So incredible, that of the 1,600 reviews posted on the book's Amazon page in just a few hours, the company soon deleted 900 it suspected of being bogus: written by people who said they loved or hated the book, but had neither purchased nor likely even read it. Fake product reviews--prompted by payola or more nefarious motives--are nothing new, but they are set to become a bigger problem as tricksters find new ways of automating online misinformation campaigns launched to sway public opinion. Amazon has deleted nearly 1,200 reviews of What Happened since it debuted on September 12, according to ReviewMeta, a watchdog site that analyzes consumer feedback for products sold on Amazon.com. ReviewMeta gained some notoriety last year when, after evaluating seven million appraisals across Amazon, it called out the online retailer for allowing "incentivized" reviews by people paid to write five-star product endorsements.

The startups with the really extraordinary ideas however, often secure funding from Venture Capitalists, in crowdfunding campaigns, or through awards or grants. The CEOs of these companies are not necessarily AI experts, but are experts in their own industry from artists, to healthcare professionals, scientists, retail managers and many more. At the Deep Learning Summit in London this September, we heard from four startups who are creating DL models in their businesses.


Meet the Mate 10, Huawei's New AI-Powered Flagship Phone

The next big thing in phones: high-end handsets that harness artificial intelligence to drive advanced features like smart photography, machine translation, and predictive behavior. While we're waiting for the Pixel 2 and the iPhone X to show up in the stores, Huawei has joined the AI fray with its new handset, the Mate 10 Pro. This is the company's first smartphone with a chip tuned to power artificial-intelligence software. Inside the phone's new Kirin 970 processor (which Huawei designed and built itself) is a component the Chinese manufacturer calls the Neural Processing Unit, and it's this corner of the phone's brains that fuels the machine-learning features. I spent some time with the new Mate 10, and the function where I could most clearly spot some intelligent behavior is the Translate app, which offers offline translation between different languages.

AI Helps You Paint Like Van Gogh – NVIDIA Developer News Center

Product design and development firm Cambridge Consultants developed a deep learning-based system that turns human sketches into paintings that resemble Van Gogh, Cézanne and Picasso. "What we've built would have been unthinkable to the original deep learning pioneers," said Monty Barlow, director machine learning at Cambridge Consultants in reference to their interactive system that call Vincent. "By successfully combining different machine learning approaches, such as adversarial training, perceptual loss, and end-to-end training of stacked networks, we've created something hugely interactive, taking the germ of a sketched idea and allowing the history of human art to run with it." Using an NVIDIA DGX-1, they trained their Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) on thousands of paintings from the Renaissance period to the current day to study the works and build an understanding of where contrast, color and texture. Once trained on nearly 200 million parameters, Vincent is able to understand the important edges in paintings and uses this understanding to produce a complete picture.
