The 50 big ideas for 2018

@machinelearnbot

If 2017 left you breathless, exhausted by unexpected headlines, then brace yourself. The coming year may bring even more turbulent change, according to the CEOs, academics, economists and other bold thinkers we consulted for our annual peek at the year ahead.

Can a dreaming AI fix low res digital photos in the edit?

Even so, given the grungy subject matter, the poster still came out looking pretty cool overall. So for this use-case I was pleased.

Cloudless AI sound recognition coming to hearables

#artificialintelligence

Audio Analytic, the pioneer of sound recognition software and hearables manufacturer Bragi, today announced a partnership to collaborate on incorporating sound recognition capabilities into Bragi devices. The companies share a vision of how embeddable intelligent sound recognition can bring new levels of usability, convenience and safety to earphone users. At January's Consumer Electronics Show 2018 (CES) Audio Analytic, will use their conversation detection demonstration, developed with Bragi, to illustrate how sound recognition can help consumers seamlessly move between a rich audio experience and spontaneous interactions with their friends and important events around them. Bragi is a pioneer in the smart hearables category. The company manufactures wireless earphones with sensors and intelligence that enable features including real-time translation, fitness tracking, music, and gesture controls.

In 2017, society started taking AI bias seriously

Engadget

A crime-predicting algorithm in Florida falsely labeled black people re-offenders at nearly twice the rate of white people. Google Translate converted the gender-neutral Turkish terms for certain professions into "he is a doctor" and "she is a nurse" in English. A Nikon camera asked its Asian user if someone blinked in the photo -- no one did. From the ridiculous to the chilling, algorithmic bias -- social prejudices embedded in the AIs that play an increasingly large role in society -- has been exposed for years. But it seems in 2017 we reached a tipping point in public awareness.

The hidden ways bots disrupt our lives

#artificialintelligence

Millions are combing online shopping sites for last-minute gifts, but some things are selling out in the blink of an eye. The culprits may be computer programs that perform specific, repetitive tasks at breakneck speed, like buying things online en masse to be resold elsewhere at inflated prices. From online shopping, to ticket sales for concerts and events – and even fake identities that troll social media – these bots have made headlines in 2017. They'll continue to seep into our lives in myriad ways next year, too. They can be a scourge.

From complexity to simplicity ... • r/MachineLearning

@machinelearnbot

I am currently working on nlp and this is another research work that I encountered - https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.03762 It's the "Attention is all you need" paper. I am pretty sure most of the folks would have already read it (reddit:)). With this one in the light now, what do you think? Is it possible that the fully connected neural network is itself the key?

Have yourself a streaming little Christmas

PCWorld

Christmas is largely about tradition, and sometimes it's nice to watch the same old stuff: movies that celebrate Christmas for all its good qualities, its ability to bring people together and to get some people to be a little bit nicer to one another. The movies here are sure to get the cheer flowing. If you'd rather skip the Christmas carols and good cheer, come back tomorrow when we'll offer our favorite twisted holiday fare. Santa's ne'er-do-well son Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy) gets the chance to save Christmas in Arthur Christmas. Coming from Aardman Animations--the English company that brought us Wallace and Gromit--Arthur Christmas (2011) is one of the most hilarious, colorful, and exciting animated Christmas movies ever made. Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy) is the clumsy, cheery son of Santa Claus; he works in a little, brightly colored office answering letters to children, and he loves his job. His older brother Steve (voiced by Hugh Laurie), on the other hand, pretty much runs the high-tech operation of delivering presents to all the children in the world in one night, while the current Santa Claus (voiced by Jim Broadbent) seems to have reached retirement age.

AI in 2018: What works, what doesn't, and what's still science fiction

#artificialintelligence

Year after year, blockbuster films are replete with Turing-test-passing examples of AI -- and this past year was no exception. From Blade Runner 2049 to Marjorie Prime to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it seems the public's appetite for depictions of truly intelligent AI is insatiable. This tendency to dream of overly optimistic futures when it comes to technology is hardly relegated to the movies. In 2016, publications including Wired, Forbes, and, yes, VentureBeat, eagerly predicted a year where "machines will win" and AI will spark "the beginning of a new internet." However, while there have been massive advances in AI this year, particularly in semantic recognition, the future the media predicted is far from realized.
