Artificial Intelligence Celebrate 10 Years Of Integral Records

#artificialintelligence

Just like its founders Artificial Intelligence, Integral Records' spirit is defined by collaboration. Whether it's the early collaborations of Technicolour & Komatic (now Technimatic), the recent Philip fusion with Phil:osophy or the ongoing mystery moves of Dawn Wall and Mohican Sun, there's always been a strong collective energy to the label. Glenn Herweijer, one half of Artificial Intelligence, puts much of this spirit down to D.O.P.E, a Leeds-based night he was resident at with Marcus Intalex and Ant TC1. It's here where Glenn road-tested plenty of his production partner-to-be, Zula Warner's, early creations and initiated a trend of creativity from connection that seems key to understanding how both Artificial Intelligence and Integral have developed. With the label now celebrating its 10th anniversary, Glenn and Zula are hosting a massive event this Friday and releasing a 10 Years Of Integral album next month.

DATA DUMP: A Beginners Guide to Artificial Intelligence – Culpeper Times

#artificialintelligence

If I asked you to describe the first thing that pops into your head when you hear Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), what would it be? Do you imagine a world where machines take over the planet like Skynet in The Terminator movie series? Or maybe something simpler such as when you use your phone to ask Siri or your Echo speaker to ask Alexa, "What will the weather be like today?" Regardless of what first pops into your head, most of you probably imagine a world where a machine both thinks and acts like a human autonomously. In reality, A.I. is a computing device that can mimic human thought and decision-making ability. The device can perceive its own environment and act on its own to reach the goal.

Is your software racist?

#artificialintelligence

Late last year, a St. Louis tech executive named Emre Şarbak noticed something strange about Google Translate. He was translating phrases from Turkish -- a language that uses a single gender-neutral pronoun "o" instead of "he" or "she." But when he asked Google's tool to turn the sentences into English, they seemed to read like a children's book out of the 1950's. The ungendered Turkish sentence "o is a nurse" would become "she is a nurse," while "o is a doctor" would become "he is a doctor." The website Quartz went on to compose a sort-of poem highlighting some of these phrases; Google's translation program decided that soldiers, doctors and entrepreneurs were men, while teachers and nurses were women.

Why the Copyright Directive Lacks (Artificial) Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is hot. Although its capabilities have been steadily increasing for years, it was the victory of DeepMind's AlphaGo program over the top Go expert Lee Se-dol last year that alerted many to the rapid pace of development in the AI field.

Which smart speaker should I buy? How the Apple HomePod, Amazon Echo and Sonos could improve your life

The Independent - Tech

The most exciting thing about smart speakers is that they are all so utterly imperfect. Each of the mainstream examples – Amazon's Echos, the Google Home, Sonos's wide range and the new Apple HomePod – packs within it stunning technology that would have been unimaginable just a couple of years ago. But they're also full of downsides, making choosing one a matter of deciding what you want, not simply settling on the best. Deciding is a matter of picking which things you want – and which things you definitely don't. Some sound good, but are terrible at talking back to you.

Chinese farmers using AI to track, monitor pigs

#artificialintelligence

A new artificial intelligence (AI) project from tech conglomerate Alibaba could alleviate some of the myriad problems facing Chinese farmers in the pork industry. China is the world's largest producer and consumer of pork, and keeping track of the nation's estimated 700 million animals is notoriously difficult for farmers. They need to pay careful attention to ensure that piglets aren't crushed to death by their mothers, sows aren't bred past their prime, and sick pigs don't pass their illnesses on to the rest of the population. Currently, farmers track pigs by clipping wireless radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to the animals' ears. These can be expensive, and farmers don't always have time to fit each pig with a tag and scan them. They also provide only very basic information about the pigs' locations -- they can't determine anything about the animals' health and wellbeing.
