[D] Hinton: Multi-layer neural networks should never been called MLPs • r/MachineLearning

@machinelearnbot

Not sure when the term Multi-Layer Perceptron was coined (in terms of multi-layer, fully-connected, feedforward neural net with non-linear activation functions and fit via backprop), but I assume it was in the 1980s around the time of Rumelhard et al.'s backprop paper. So in that context, Perceptron referred to the linear, binary classifier that uses some kind of step-function flavor to update the weights (as opposed to the delta rule or backprop). Or in short, I think around the time the term MLP was (re?)-coined, there was only one common "Rosenblatt Perceptron"

Westworld-like 'Mesmer' robot comes alive in a UK factory

Engadget

We all love Westworld, but its main premise -- that we'll be able to build robots identical to human in the near future -- still seems impossibly far-fetched. That said, a company called Engineered Arts is definitely exploring the edges of the uncanny valley. It has built a number of life-sized, humanoid robots that look incredibly realistic and move smoothly, quietly and relatively naturally. The company's robots have been sold for research, education and entertainment purposes. However, it recently unveiled its top-of-the line "Mesmer" series, realistic down to the pores and individual hairs. They're "skinned by the best in the TV and film business," Engineered Arts explained in the (Westworld-like) promotional video, below.

The British glove manufacturer Cornelia James is often in the public eye. Since 1979, it has provided gloves by royal appointment to the Queen of England, and more recently it has dressed megastars including Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Madonna. All those high-profile customers are great for publicity, but nobody drives sales quite like Kate Middleton, said Genevieve James, the company's creative director. "We get far more of a spike in sales when someone like Kate wears them. But when it's somebody like the Duchess of Cambridge, the public, particularly in the US, can relate to that," James told IBM. James first confirmed that fact in 2012 when, at a ceremony for Remembrance Sunday, Middleton wore a pair of Cornelia James' merino wool gloves.

'Rogue One' and 6 More Great Sci-Fi Movies Streaming Now

WIRED

For genre un-enthusiasts, it's easy to dismiss science fiction as a land of make-believe--a place where androids can become sentient and no one bats an eye. But for those who are willing to suspended disbelief and don't mind looking beyond CGI, the best sci-fi titles are filled with more than enough action, drama, comedy, and even romance to keep any movie fan glued to the screen. You just need to know where to look. Below is a selection of the best sci-fi movies you can currently stream on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. We hate to state the obvious, but with a seemingly infinite number of new films in the works, the Star Wars franchise is getting dangerously close to oversaturation.
