Nintendo Switch YouTube app release date could be about to arrive, latest leaks suggest

The Independent - Tech

A YouTube app could be about to arrive on the Nintendo Switch, according to a series of leaks. Players have long been hoping for some way of streaming videos including YouTube onto the portable console, but have been mostly frustrated. Now a listing has been spotted that suggests Google's video app could finally be arriving on or around 8 November. Many Turn to YouTube for Children's Content, News, How-To Lessons

#artificialintelligence

A majority of Americans across a wide range of demographic groups are YouTube adopters, with younger Americans standing out as especially avid users of the site. A new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults finds that these users are turning to YouTube for much more than entertainment. Roughly half of YouTube users say the platform is very important for helping them figure out how to do things they've never done before. That works out to 35% of all U.S. adults, once both users and non-users of the site are accounted for. And around one-in-five YouTube users (representing 13% of the total adult population) say it is very important for helping them understand events that are happening in the world. The findings also highlight YouTube's key role in providing content for children.

Huawei Chips Unlock New Era of Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

On October 10, 2018, Huawei officially released a full-stack all-scenario AI solution. 'Full-stack' means the solution provides powerful and cost-effective computing power, as well as low-barrier application development platforms that make AI data modeling, model training, and application development simpler, more agile, and more efficient. As an'all-scenario' solution, it is able to drive pervasive intelligence across various device, edge, and cloud scenarios. Ascend 310 is the industry's most powerful AI SoC chip for edge computing scenarios. Currently, the most typical edge computing scenarios are security and protection, autonomous driving, and smart manufacturing.

Linear Memory Networks

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Recurrent neural networks can learn complex transduction problems that require maintaining and actively exploiting a memory of their inputs. Such models traditionally consider memory and input-output functionalities indissolubly entangled. We introduce a novel recurrent architecture based on the conceptual separation between the functional input-output transformation and the memory mechanism, showing how they can be implemented through different neural components. By building on such conceptualization, we introduce the Linear Memory Network, a recurrent model comprising a feedforward neural network, realizing the non-linear functional transformation, and a linear autoencoder for sequences, implementing the memory component. The resulting architecture can be efficiently trained by building on closed-form solutions to linear optimization problems. Further, by exploiting equivalence results between feedforward and recurrent neural networks we devise a pretraining schema for the proposed architecture. Experiments on polyphonic music datasets show competitive results against gated recurrent networks and other state of the art models.

Netflix hack day project uses eye tracking to navigate its iOS app

Engadget

Netflix's hack days frequently produce fanciful results, but its latest might be key to making its streaming service more accessible. The company's engineers have developed an experimental "Eye Nav" feature that lets you navigate the iOS app using the face tracking in newer iPhones (and, potentially, iPads). You use your eyes to control the cursor, staring at an item to select it. And if you need to back out? Just stick out your tongue.

The case for conversational banking

#artificialintelligence

In today's experience economy, customer expectations couldn't be higher. Thanks to companies like Netflix, Spotify, and Amazon, consumers have grown accustomed to having relevant, always-on, and highly personalised offers and services curated for them. Not only that, they now expect the same kinds of experiences from every brand they regularly interact with. Their banks are no exception. At a time when the war for customers is raging, that means that any bank that fails to take action could find itself in serious trouble.

How AI Is Personalizing Entertainment

#artificialintelligence

From offering simple streaming content to highly personalized streaming content, streaming media technology has come a long way with a lot happening along the way. Offering streaming content was an achievement, but its progress was constrained by various factors such as computer hardware cost, limited computer capabilities, limited internet bandwidth and lack of compression technologies. Then things changed as computer abilities improved, hardware and storage cost reduced, compression technologies were improved, internet bandwidth improved and that gave a boost to streaming content. Various events began to be broadcast via streaming and the results were encouraging. Businesses sensed a good investment opportunity and jumped onto the bandwagon. But something even bigger was to come – the mobile device revolution and artificial intelligence (AI).

Reddit founder warns 'hustle porn' is 'most toxic, dangerous thing in tech'

The Independent - Tech

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has warned that the glorification of long working hours, or "hustle porn", has become a dangerous trend among tech workers that is putting people's mental and physical health at risk. Speaking at the annual Web Summit technology conference in Lisbon, Mr Ohanian criticised the spread of a working culture that he said stems from tech startups and companies in Silicon Valley. The 35-year-old entrepreneur, who now heads the early stage venture capital firm Initialized Capital, said it was common practice among tech workers to fetishise long working hours – something he admits to doing in the early days of Reddit. Silver screen machines: These are the all-time best movies about A.I.

#artificialintelligence

There are some great tech documentaries out there, but sometimes you just need a good feature film. But which one to choose for the discerning A.I. fan? Combing through the cinematic archives, we've made our picks for the best A.I.-themed movies you have to see before you die. Or, at least, before the machines take over and we're put to work in the dung mines with no time for frivolous entertainment. Artificial intelligence wasn't formed as its own official discipline until the mid-1950s, but the first "must watch" movie on this list pre-dates this by more than a quarter century. Made by German expressionist filmmaker Fritz Lang, Metropolis is an epic science fiction film which has inspired countless other movies in the genre.

Class-conditional embeddings for music source separation

arXiv.org Machine Learning

ABSTRACT Isolating individual instruments in a musical mixture has a myriad of potential applications, and seems imminently achievable given the levels of performance reached by recent deep learning methods. While most musical source separation techniques learn an independent model for each instrument, we propose using a common embedding space for the time-frequency bins of all instruments in a mixture inspired by deep clustering and deep attractor networks. Additionally, an auxiliary network is used to generate parameters of a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) where the posterior distribution over GMM components in the embedding space can be used to create a mask that separates individual sources from a mixture. In addition to outperforming a mask-inference baseline on the MUSDB-18 dataset, our embedding space is easily interpretable and can be used for query-based separation. Index Terms -- source separation, deep clustering, music, classification, neural networks 1. INTRODUCTION Audio source separation is the act of isolating sound-producing sources in an auditory scene. Examples include separating singing voice from accompanying music, the voice of a single speaker at a crowded party, or the sound of a car backfiring in a loud urban soundscape.
