Spotify app update brings very controversial, hidden repeat button

The Independent - Tech

Spotify's latest update is drawing anger from users who claim it has hidden one of its most important buttons. The company recently released a redesigned version of its app for iOS and Android that brought a minor tweak to the way the app looks. But that minor tweak has caused major upset among the users who have disagreed with designers' latest choices. The most controversial of the changes is that the "repeat" and "go to queue" buttons have fallen off the now playing screen that users regularly see while listening to music. Instead, people must bury into menus if they want songs to keep playing or to see what's coming up next.

AI researchers debate the ethics of sharing potentially harmful programs

#artificialintelligence

A recent decision by research lab OpenAI to limit the release of a new algorithm has caused controversy in the AI community. The nonprofit said it decided not to share the full version of the program, a text-generation algorithm named GPT-2, due to concerns over "malicious applications." But many AI researchers have criticized the decision, accusing the lab of exaggerating the danger posed by the work and inadvertently stoking "mass hysteria" about AI in the process. The debate has been wide-ranging and sometimes contentious. It even turned into a bit of a meme among AI researchers, who joked that they've had an amazing breakthrough in the lab, but the results were too dangerous to share at the moment.

Elmo R. Lugo on LinkedIn: "#photography #ai"

Adobe has announced a new #feature for its suite of #photo-editing apps called #Enhance Details that uses #machine #learning to #artificially improve the #resolution and picture quality of #zoomed-in images. The results aren't as dramatic as the "zoom and enhance" tropes of TV and film, but they do show how #AI can help fill in details in #digital pictures. The new tool will be available in #Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic CC, and #Lightroom CC for Mac and Windows, and #Adobe claims it can increase the resolution of certain images by up to 30 percent. Enhance Details works by introducing machine learning to a process called "demosaicing." This is an algorithmic step that happens during the creation of a digital image, in which the camera adds color to the initial monochrome file.

Artificial Intelligence: Some of the Challenges Ahead Lexology

#artificialintelligence

AI is more pervasive in our daily lives than one may think. Spotify and Netflix use AI to recommend songs, films or television shows which it considers relevant to our interests based on our past activity or choices. Amazon uses it to recommend products based on past purchases or web browsing activity. Our increased reliance on online services and smart phones means that humans are interacting with AI at an ever-increasing rate. The technology has the potential to greatly increase efficiency, to save lives and to increase the general standard of living.

'I realised machine learning could make my musical dreams come true'

#artificialintelligence

Tech innovator and singer Prof Maya Ackerman sees AI as the perfect testing ground for music, where people's creativity can really flourish. While there are many facets of artificial intelligence (AI) that seem destined to takeover our lives, there seems to be fewer pursuits destined to become filled with robots than music. With the meteoric rise of music streaming and its ability to track our music interests, likes and dislikes, music producers have as good a picture as ever of what to make that has a high-percentage chance of topping the charts. However, away from the business end, some researchers and artists are finding ways to use machine learning to create a human/robot collaboration that few would discern is based on an algorithm. One such individual is Prof Maya Ackerman, a leading AI researcher based at the computer engineering department at Santa Clara University in the US.

Will Journalists Be Replaced by Artificial Intelligence?

#artificialintelligence

Is artificial intelligence poised to put thousands of journalists out on the streets? It can certainly look that way, with AI creeping into journalism more each day. An AI-powered -- and eerily-human -- newscaster debuted late last year in China, and earlier this week Axios published a fake article using an AI program that's capable of generating news posts that seem indistinguishable from its other stories. In recent years, legacy outlets like the Los Angeles Times and the BBC have turned to AI to write earthquake stories and curate programming schedules, respectively. World's first #AI news anchor debuts, jointly developed by Xinhua and Chinese search engine company https://t.co/34tyZ4nwrg.
