The Story Universe of Magic: The Gathering Is Expanding

#artificialintelligence

Two years ago a novelist and as-yet-unproduced screenwriter named Nic Kelman went to work for Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes the popular collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. Kelman's job, though he might not put it this way, was to write a grimoire--a kabbalistic story bible. "Rules for magic out of the rules for Magic," as Kelman says. The company needed that grimoire because it was going to try to cast a spell in the real world--to transform a popular albeit niche game, complicated and nerdy, into a cross-media franchise. That has happened for comic books, for literature, even for toys, heaven help us.

Your Smart TV Is Getting Too Smart--and Collecting Your Data

#artificialintelligence

To the delight of binge-watchers everywhere, it's no longer prohibitively expensive to purchase a giant television. And those devices are also getting smarter, with features like voice commands, personalized recommendations, and built-in apps for Netflix and other streaming services. It's almost impossible to buy a TV without them. The average consumer might ascribe the declining price to a variant of Moore's law. "Right now, you're paying with your data, but you don't know the price," says Casey Oppenheim, CEO of Disconnect, a privacy-focused software company.

Using Word Embeddings to Examine Gender Bias in Dutch Newspapers, 1950-1990

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Contemporary debates on filter bubbles and polarization in public and social media raise the question to what extent news media of the past exhibited biases. This paper specifically examines bias related to gender in six Dutch national newspapers between 1950 and 1990. We measure bias related to gender by comparing local changes in word embedding models trained on newspapers with divergent ideological backgrounds. We demonstrate clear differences in gender bias and changes within and between newspapers over time. In relation to themes such as sexuality and leisure, we see the bias moving toward women, whereas, generally, the bias shifts in the direction of men, despite growing female employment number and feminist movements. Even though Dutch society became less stratified ideologically (depillarization), we found an increasing divergence in gender bias between religious and social-democratic on the one hand and liberal newspapers on the other. Methodologically, this paper illustrates how word embeddings can be used to examine historical language change. Future work will investigate how fine-tuning deep contextualized embedding models, such as ELMO, might be used for similar tasks with greater contextual information.

Enterprise Artificial Intelligence Deployments Are Beginning to Reach Commercial Scale

#artificialintelligence

Enterprises are beginning to recognize the value associated with incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into their business processes, according to a new report from Tractica. The number of proof-of-concept and pilot programs continues to grow, and larger scale commercial deployments of AI technology are being publicized by enterprise organizations around the globe. Tractica forecasts that worldwide revenue from deployments of AI software, hardware, and services will increase from $14.9 billion in 2017 to $23.6 billion in 2018, a year-over-year increase of 58%. The market intelligence firm's analysis finds that the top 10 industries for adoption of enterprise AI are as follows: "Results from early enterprise AI deployments are quite strong in terms of improving operational efficiencies, reducing expenses, and enhancing the resolution of data analytics," says principal analyst Keith Kirkpatrick. "Indeed, much of the success of AI is due to the fact that most tasks currently delegated to AI technology are data-driven and therefore easily measured or benchmarked. When AI technology is deployed, even during a small pilot program, the benefits can quickly be demonstrated and proven by looking at the performance data."

The Great Hack: the film that goes behind the scenes of the Facebook data scandal

#artificialintelligence

Cambridge Analytica may have become the byword for a scandal, but it's not entirely clear that anyone knows exactly what that scandal is. It's more like toxic word association: "Facebook", "data", "harvested", "weaponised", "Trump" and, in this country, most controversially, "Brexit". It was a media firestorm that's yet to be extinguished, a year on from whistleblower Christopher Wylie's revelations in the Observer and the New York Times about how the company acquired the personal data of tens of millions of Facebook users in order to target them in political campaigns. This week sees the release of The Great Hack, a Netflix documentary that is the first feature-length attempt to gather all the strands of the affair into some sort of narrative โ€“ though it is one contested even by those appearing in the film. "This is not about one company," Julian Wheatland, the ex-chief operating officer of Cambridge Analytica, claims at one point. "This technology is going on unabated and will continue to go on unabated.[โ€ฆ] There was always going to be a Cambridge Analytica. It just sucks to me that it's Cambridge Analytica."

Generating Beatles' Lyrics with Machine Learning - Towards Data Science

#artificialintelligence

The Beatles were a huge cultural phenomenon. Their timeless music still resonates with people today, both young and old. In my humble opinion, they are the greatest band to have ever livedยน. Their songs are full of interesting lyrics and deep ideas. When you've seen beyond yourself Then you may find peace of mind is waiting thereยฒ However, the thing that made the Beatles great was their versatility.

Four Reasons Most Service Robots Fail - Techonomy

#artificialintelligence

The Tally robot, from Simbe Robotics, helps out in stores so people can be freed from the monotonous task of checking shelves for inventory. Wouldn't it be nice if robots could clean our office, greet clients or put away the groceries at home? But even though we want and often embrace advances that make our lives simpler, the vision of robot as dutiful helper hasn't come to fruition. Robotics has made a big difference in manufacturing, but has failed to make it into our homes and businesses in a meaningful way. It turns out the challenges are plentiful.
