Spotting misinformation online via artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

We live in an era of too much information -- an endless stream of status updates, memes, reposts, infographics, quotes and hashtags roll daily through our social media feeds, meant to express viewpoints, drum up solidarity, provide information, change minds or cause controversy. Problem is, the average online browser/social media user doesn't have the time or wherewithal to investigate the legitimacy or provenance of everything that shows up on their feeds. And it is this vulnerability that less scrupulous content generators exploit to spread misinformation, with results that can range from a little egg-on-face embarrassment to downright life-changing or potentially deadly consequences. For UC Santa Barbara computer scientist William Wang, this chaotic morass is fertile grounds for exploration. Wang believes that deep learning techniques, when deployed on the text and hyperlink network of online posts and news articles, can help us with some of the critical thinking heavy lifting.

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

When it comes to pure, cutting the cord TVs, Amazon's Fire TV Edition paved new ground in 2018. It was low-priced and aimed at folks who were happy ditching cable, plugging in an antenna and using the set to watch Internet programming. Vizio's new V436-61, just out, goes even further. It does all of that, and more. Instead of just being able to use voice commands via the Amazon Alexa assistant, Vizio lets you use Apple's Siri and the Google Assistant as well.

Could the Tech in

#artificialintelligence

Two things appear to be repetitively accurate about emerging technologies. First, content production studios often set unrealistic expectations on what's possible and what isn't with new devices and systems. Second, innovators of all types are doing their best to catch up with fiction and sometimes have to remind everybody that what's onscreen can be misleading. Remember the movie'Tomorrowland' starring George Clooney and a whiz kid in a futuristic city? The film was memorable because it gave us a utopian vision of the future.
