Open-sourcing Polynote: an IDE-inspired polyglot notebook

#artificialintelligence

We are pleased to announce the open-source launch of Polynote: a new, polyglot notebook with first-class Scala support, Apache Spark integration, multi-language interoperability including Scala, Python, and SQL, as-you-type autocomplete, and more. Polynote provides data scientists and machine learning researchers with a notebook environment that allows them the freedom to seamlessly integrate our JVM-based ML platform -- which makes heavy use of Scala -- with the Python ecosystem's popular machine learning and visualization libraries. It has seen substantial adoption among Netflix's personalization and recommendation teams, and it is now being integrated with the rest of our research platform. At Netflix, we have always felt strongly about sharing with the open source community, and believe that Polynote has a great potential to address similar needs outside of Netflix. Polynote promotes notebook reproducibility by design.

Terminator: Dark Fate Sequels Would Focus on Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Terminator: Dark Fate producer James Cameron reveals that future films in the franchise would focus on artificial intelligence. The sixth movie in the Terminator series, Dark Fate executes a radical do-over by ignoring the events of Terminator 3, Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genisys and acting as a direct sequel to 1992's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the last film in the series that enjoyed Cameron's personal involvement. The "Judgment Day" concept indeed looms large in Dark Fate, as Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor returns to again try to prevent the machines from taking over the world. This time, Connor meets up with a pair of fellow female warriors, Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) and Grace (Mackenzie Davis), the latter of whom is a human/cyborg hybrid sent back from the future. Of course, there's also a new Terminator, the menacing Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna), which has the ability to split into two separate autonomous killing machines.

Understanding how BERT reasons

#artificialintelligence

BERT is now the go-to model framework for NLP tasks in industry, in about a year after it was published by Google AI. When released, it achieved state-of-the-art results on a variety of NLP benchmarks. It's referred to as a framework because BERT is not a model per se, but in the words of the authors themselves, it is a "method of pre-training language representations, meaning that we train a general-purpose "language understanding" model on a large text corpus (like Wikipedia), and then use that model for downstream NLP tasks that we care about (like question answering)." For the purpose of this blogpost, when we refer to a BERT model, we mean a model based on the BERT architecture and fine tuned for a particular task using pre-trained weights. Several papers have attempted to explain it, and created a field that the people at HuggingFace call Bertology .

We believe AI needs HR, not the other way around."
