The researchers first scoured music streaming sites like Spotify for songs with very few plays, tagged either "happy" or "sad." Through a series of human testers, 60 pieces for each emotion were narrowed down to a final list of three: two that reliably induced sadness (Ólafur Arnalds's "Fyrsta" and Michael Kamen's "Discovery of the Camp") and one that reliably induced happiness (Lullatone's "Race Against the Sunset"). One hundred participants who hadn't heard the songs before split into two groups, listened to all three pieces, and either took an fMRI scan or wore pulse, heat, and electricity sensors on their skin and rated the intensity of their emotions on a scale of 0 to 10.

The Indian state of Tamil Nadu is reportedly working on a state-level policy for blockchain technology and artificial intelligence (AI). On Oct. 31, local news outlet The Times of India reported that Tamil Nadu, the 10th-largest state in India, is working on separate policies for blockchain and AI which could be released as soon as the next 10 days. Tamil Nadu's blockchain and AI policies are expected to establish ground rules on how the state government can apply the emerging technologies for service delivery and solving governance issues. Santosh Misra, CEO of the state's e-Governance Agency commented: "We are working on separate policies on blockchain and AI. The AI policy is going to be perhaps the world's first policy addressing safe and ethical use of AI [...] No state or country has announced a standalone policy to address the safety and ethics associated with AI, and we have no precedence for it."

Technology is creating ever-changing expectations for people, and Gartner's top predictions for 2020 reflect these new challenges. The predictions were revealed at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo 2019 in Orlando, which runs through October 24. More than 9,000 IT leaders and CIO's are in attendance at the conference. "Technology is changing the notion of what it means to be human," said Daryl Plummer, distinguished vice president and Gartner Fellow. "As workers and citizens see technology as an enhancement of their abilities, the human condition changes as well. CIOs in end-user organizations must understand the effects of the change and reset expectations for what technology means."

Accusonus, the Greece and U.S.-based AI company helping content creators improve the audio in their videos, has raised $3.3 million in Series A funding. The round is led by Athens-based Venture Friends, with participation from Big Pi, IQBility, PJ Tech, along with a syndicate of U.S.-based investors led by Michael Tzannes, who is actually the co-founder of Accusonus (and the former CEO of Aware Inc.). Launched in 2014, Accusonus has been using AI for various audio and music applications longer than most. The company's first product was Drumatom, which allows recording engineers to control microphone leakage (also known as bleed or spill) in drum recordings. In 2017, Accusonus followed up with the release of Regroover, an AI software instrument that un-mixes audio loops into stems so that new beat making workflows are possible. Its products are said to have been used by engineers working with musicians such as Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Goo Goo Dolls, Super Furry Animals, Wilco, Jennifer Lopez, and many others.
