Intel takes new twist on artificial intelligence innovation with Valley degree program

Long known for its innovations in the development of artificial intelligence applications, Santa Barbara, California-based Intel Corp. is taking its AI …

The World's Fastest Supercomputer Is an Exascale Machine for AI

But for machine learning, Fugaku is already there. That's significant because AI researchers are scaling up machine learning algorithms at a quick pace.

On to the Next One: Jay-Z Beefs with A.I....Are Other Artists Next?

#artificialintelligence

When we're first learning to make music, most of us don't worry about an A.I. stealing our flow. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But when Jay-Z heard himself on the internet spitting iambic pentameter -- Hamlet's "To Be, or Not to Be" soliloquy, to be exact -- "flattered" is hardly the word for how he responded. It was produced by a well-trained computer speech synthesis program using artificial intelligence. An anonymous YouTube artist named Vocal Synthesis has created a library of popular voices mismatched with unexpected famous texts, including George Bush reading "In Da Club" by 50 Cent, Barack Obama reading "Juicy" by Notorious B.I.G, and, yes, Jay-Z reading Hamlet (and Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire").

Microsoft's robot editor confuses mixed-race Little Mix singers

#artificialintelligence

Asked why Microsoft was deploying software that cannot tell mixed-race individuals apart, whether apparent racist bias could seep into deployments of the company's artificial intelligence software by leading corporations, and whether the company would reconsider plans to replace the human editors with robots, a spokesman for the tech company said: "As soon as we became aware of this issue, we immediately took action to resolve it and have replaced the incorrect image."

'Machine' examines Artificial Intelligence and asks, 'Are we screwed?'

#artificialintelligence

Justin Krook, director of the documentary Machine, set out to make a film that examines the pros and cons of the development development of artificial intelligence. Reports of humanity's demise are greatly exaggerated (despite what you might have heard about Boston Dynamics developing the first robot dog of the apocalypse). Nonetheless,Terminator 2: Judgement Day is a ways off yet, but that's no reason to become complacent, says Krook, who warns that we're destined for a series of calamities of our own making, if we don't consider the ethics behind the application of this new technology. Krook spent a year talking to experts in the field of AI and machine learning, who have first-hand experience of developing, analysing and managing this new technology. It's a lot to take in: everything from AI companions to the quandaries of driverless cars, autonomous warfare (!), and the use of AI to create human super-intelligence. On the eve of the film's premiere on SBS VICELAND and On Demand, I spoke to Krook via video. "The first thing that comes out of people's mouths when I say, 'I made a documentary on AI', is, 'Are we screwed?'"

With TV companies battling for market share, differentiation is important to get those all-important viewers, and retain ad revenue. And AI is the tool to attract television companies to AI solutions and help them prepare for the future. Like every other industry, television has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic as viewers moved to consume far greater amounts of content than before. But now creators face massive challenges when it comes to managing, producing and distributing TV content. Costa Mesa, CA-based AI solutions company Veritone has recently released its pulse check on AI adoption report.

Michael Hawley, Programmer, Professor and Pianist, Dies at 58

#artificialintelligence

Michael Hawley, a computer programmer, professor, musician, speechwriter and impresario who helped lay the intellectual groundwork for what is now called the Internet of Things, died on Wednesday at his home in Cambridge, Mass. The cause was colon cancer, said his father, George Hawley. Mr. Hawley began his career as a video game programmer at Lucasfilm, the company created by the "Star Wars" director George Lucas. He spent his last 15 years curating the Entertainment Gathering, or EG, a conference dedicated to new ideas. In between, he worked at NeXT, the influential computer company founded by Steve Jobs after he left Apple in the mid-1980s, and spent nine years as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, a seminal effort to push science and technology into art and other disciplines.
