Stop Expecting Artificial Intelligence to Do It All

Until machine learning can make ethical decisions, show emotion, and laugh at itself, it won't measure up to human abilities or consciousness.

AI robot 'Erica' will star in $70 million sci-fi movie 'b'

Engadget

Robots are likely to replace a lot of jobs in the future, but these roles are generally well-suited to automation. For some jobs -- particularly creative professions -- it'll be much harder to simply swap in a digital employee. But as a forthcoming feature film proves, it won't be impossible. According to Hollywood Reporter, science-fiction movie b will be the first to rely on an artificially intelligent actor. Meet Erica (pictured above), a humanoid robot that will take center stage in Life Productions' $70 million picture, which tells the tale of a scientist tasked with creating perfect human DNA.

Fortnite Movie Nite: Christopher Nolan's hit films screen in-game

BBC News

Later this Friday, Fortnite players will stow away their guns and kick back for a movie screening. Three of Christopher Nolan's biggest films - The Dark Knight, Inception, and The Prestige - will be shown in the game's Party Royale mode. What you'll see will depend on what country you're in. But why would anyone want to watch a film inside a video game? "The real world is unbeatable, in my opinion," says Darshan Shankar, the founder of Bigscreen VR - a company that lets users watch films together in cinemas created within virtual reality. "Things like Fortnite and Bigscreen don't necessarily replace the awesomeness of a real world cinema," he says, instead it's about being "able to watch things together with people".

Text search tool makes finding documents easier

Based in New York, Grafiti was co-founded by former journalist Farhan Mustafa and venture advisor Akbar Dawood. Dawood is an advisor to Untethered Labs. Mustafa, who also has a background in data analytics, said he came up with the idea for Grafiti.io while working as a consultant and producer for the Al Jazeera Media Network. Frustrated by the drudgery of combing through news stories looking for charts and graphs while reporting for Al Jazeera in the Middle East, Mustafa wanted a tool that would surface visual information onto a single page, instead of having to go into each story to see the visuals. Grafiti has a platform that does that.

Artificially intelligent humanoid robot 'Erica' nabs lead role in $70 million Hollywood sci-fi movie

Daily Mail - Science & tech

An artificially intelligent humanoid robot has nabbed the leading role in a $70 million (ยฃ56.4 million) upcoming Hollywood sci-fi movie, titled'b'. Erica, the eerily human-like android actress, will play the role of a genetically-modified superhuman who goes on the run with the scientists who created her. The electric leading lady is understood to have shot her first scenes for the movie in Japan last year -- with the rest of the film scheduled to be shot next year. An artificially intelligent humanoid robot has nabbed the leading role in a $70 million (ยฃ56.4 million) upcoming Hollywood sci-fi movie, titled ' b '. Erica -- who made her public debut back in 2015 -- is the brainchild of roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro of Japan's Osaka University, who calls his creation the world's'most beautiful and human-like android.'

Generating compositions in the style of Bach using the AR-CNN algorithm in AWS DeepComposer

#artificialintelligence

AWS DeepComposer gives you a creative way to get started with machine learning (ML) and generative AI techniques. AWS DeepComposer recently launched a new generative AI algorithm called autoregressive convolutional neural network (AR-CNN), which allows you to generate music in the style of Bach. In this blog post, we show a few examples of how you can use the AR-CNN algorithm to generate interesting compositions in the style of Bach and explain how the algorithm's parameters impact the characteristics of the generated composition. The AR-CNN algorithm provided in the AWS DeepComposer console offers a variety of parameters to generate unique compositions, such as the number of iterations and the maximum number of notes to add to or remove from the input melody to generate unique compositions. The parameter values will directly impact the extent to which you modify the input melody.

A machine-learning approach could help counter disinformation

#artificialintelligence

Disinformation has become a central feature of the COVID-19 crisis. According to a recent poll, false or misleading information about the pandemic reaches close to half of all online news consumers in the U.K. As this type of malign information and high-tech "deepfake" imagery can spread so fast online, it poses a risk to democratic societies worldwide by increasing public mistrust in governments and public authorities -- a phenomenon referred to as "truth decay." New research, however, highlights new ways to detect and dispel disinformation online. There are several factors that may account for the rapid spread of disinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the global nature of the pandemic, more groups are using disinformation to further their agendas.

When working from home is much more than emailing

Ere Santos remembers that he once had to animate a fight between his character, the sidekick, and the hero of the film. Luckily, the hero's animator sat next to Mr Santos. Much like their creations, the two colleagues went to battle on how the interaction should work. Instead of drawing, these feature film animators create computer simulations based on physics. Mr Santos likens it to making a puppet that the computer will bring to life.
