Machine Learning Explanations to Prevent Overtrust in Fake News Detection

Combating fake news and misinformation propagation is a challenging task in the post-truth era. News feed and search algorithms could potentially lead to unintentional large-scale propagation of false and fabricated information with users being exposed to algorithmically selected false content. Our research investigates the effects of an Explainable AI assistant embedded in news review platforms for combating the propagation of fake news. We design a news reviewing and sharing interface, create a dataset of news stories, and train four interpretable fake news detection algorithms to study the effects of algorithmic transparency on end-users. We present evaluation results and analysis from multiple controlled crowdsourced studies. For a deeper understanding of Explainable AI systems, we discuss interactions between user engagement, mental model, trust, and performance measures in the process of explaining. The study results indicate that explanations helped participants to build appropriate mental models of the intelligent assistants in different conditions and adjust their trust accordingly for model limitations.

A recent article outlines the growing danger of deepfakes and their increased realism, due to machine learning and artificial intelligence. MIT's Center for Advanced Virtuality has created a technologically advanced storytelling project that has manipulated archived footage of President Richard Nixon's 1969 speech during the Apollo 11 lunar landing. The goal of the video is to demonstrate the convincing deepfake technology and warn the public of the burgeoning threat of media misinformation. While the manipulation of photography has existed since the 19th century, becoming affluent during the era of motion pictures, the current state of deepfakes has become alarmingly realistic. Beginning in the late 90's, computer scientists began experimenting with facial reanimation.
Evolutionary Simplicial Learning as a Generative and Compact Sparse Framework for Classification
Abstract: Dictionary learning for sparse representations has been successful in many reconstruction tasks. Simplicial learning is an adaptation of dictionary learning, where subspaces become clipped and acquire arbitrary offsets, taking the form of simplices. Such adaptation is achieved through additional constraints on sparse codes. Furthermore, an evolutionary approach can be chosen to determine the number and the dimensionality of simplices composing the simplicial, in which most generative and compact simplicials are favored. This paper proposes an evolutionary simplicial learning method as a generative and compact sparse framework for classification.

For the past few months, the Curriculum team at Codecademy has been hard at work creating Machine Learning courses. While we all loved writing the courses, we also wanted to see what we could do with real-world data. As a result, we challenged each other to find a use for machine learning in a topic that we were passionate about. It's said that popular music is a reflection of society, a barometer for our collective wants, fears, and emotional states. Others are of the belief that music is more a reflection of the artist, a diary that's been flung from the nightstand drawer into the media frenzy of our modern world.
