Expecting The Unexpected From AI - Liwaiwai
When we think of artificial intelligence (AI) going rogue, prime examples from the movies include HAL 9000 from 2001: Space Odyssey and Skynet from The Terminator, which were mainframe computers that reacted to the real-world problems in unexpected ways. From industrial manufacturing to autonomous vehicles, machine learning models are becoming increasingly embedded in our lives. Researchers are thus exploring pre-emptive ways to avoid harm from unexpected AI decisions when machine learning models are deployed to act in the real-world--an area of machine learning known as reinforcement learning (RL). "While deep RL has indeed been very successful in achieving state-of-the-art performance in curated academic environments, it has yet to be thoroughly tested in the presence of real-world complexities," said Abhishek Gupta, a Scientist at the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) and one of the study's senior authors. The work, which was principally conducted by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) graduate student Xinghua Qu and jointly overseen by Gupta and NTU professor Yew-Soon Ong, focused on the performance of vision-based AI, which is likely to be critical for the safe use of AI in applications such as autonomous vehicles.

Sony doubles down on virtualized 3D audio with the HT-G700, a 3.1-channel soundbar that can deliver immersive 3D audio using not one, not two, but three competing audio technologies. While it lacks the upfiring drivers that most Dolby Atmos- and DTS:X-enabled soundbars employ for height effects, the HT-G700 simulates height and surround cues using virtual 3D solutions from Dolby, DTS, and Sony itself. The HT-G700 makes for an impressive showcase for how far virtualized 3D audio has come in recent years, yet it also betrays its weaknesses, particularly when it comes to Sony's aggressive--perhaps too aggressive--implementation. The HT-G700's $500 price tag might sound enticing given its array of 3D audio functionality, but it's also missing one huge feature: a Wi-Fi adapter. That means many of the wireless capabilities we've come to expect from soundbars in this price range--including multi-room audio, AirPlay 2 or Chromecast connectivity, direct support for streaming music services, and voice assistant support--are missing.

Neural network transforms 124-year-old film into crisp HD
When it premiered in 1896, the silent short film "L'Arrivรฉe d'un train en gare de La Ciotat" was a cinematic wonder. Compared to today's motion pictures, though, the quality of the black-and-white clip is downright primitive. But now, YouTuber Denis Shiryaev has found a way to show what the film might have looked like if it had been recorded using more modern technology -- by using artificial intelligence to upscale it to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. "L'Arrivรฉe d'un train en gare de La Ciotat," which translates to "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat," depicts just what its title implies: a train arriving at a station. The original clip released in 1896 is jerky and grainy, and the features of the people at the station in the film are near-impossible to decipher.

The astonishingly good but predictably bad AI program
When the chief executive of a San Francisco artificial intelligence company tries to damp down the hype surrounding his own technology then you know that some people have become rather excitable. But that is exactly what Sam Altman attempted to do last month in response to the ecstatic reaction to OpenAI's latest GPT-3 program. "The GPT-3 hype is way too much," Mr Altman tweeted. "It's impressive (thanks for the nice compliments!) but it still has serious weaknesses and sometimes makes very silly mistakes." GPT-3, which stands for generative pre-trained transformer version three, is, in essence, a super-sophisticated auto-complete function, which sounds less than exciting.
