Considering everything else we're seeing from AI, this was just a matter of time. An artificially intelligent robot has been cast as the lead actor in a $70 million movie being made by the same people behind the Oscar-nominated Loving Vincent. Filming with the robot called Erica has already begun in Japan and is expected to wrap up in Europe next year. "Actors involve their own life experiences in the role but Erica has no life experiences," said one of her creators. "We had to simulate her motions and emotions through one-on-one sessions, such as controlling the speed of her movements, talking through her feelings and coaching character development and body language."

Erica is ready for her closeup. As the star of the upcoming $70 million dollar science-fiction movie "b", she'll be a pioneer of sorts. That's because Erica is a humanoid, created at Osaka University, in collaboration with the Advanced Telecommunication Research Institute, as an autonomous communication robot. Filmmaker Sam Khoze is an A.I. technology entrepreneur, CEO of Life Productions, Incโand the co-creator and producer of "b". After an extensive search, he cast Erica as the lead.

Coded Bias review: An eye-opening account of the dangers of AI
IN HER first semester as a graduate student at the MIT Media Lab, Joy Buolamwini encountered a peculiar problem. Commercial face-recognition software, which detected her light-skinned classmates just fine, couldn't "see" her face. Until, that is, she donned a white plastic mask in frustration. Coded Bias is a timely, thought-provoking documentary from director Shalini Kantayya. It follows Buolamwini's journey to uncover racial and sexist bias in face-recognition software and other artificial intelligence systems.

Contacts and friction are inherent to nearly all robotic manipulation tasks. Through the motor skill of insertion, we study how robots can learn to cope when these attributes play a salient role. In this work we propose residual learning from demonstration (rLfD), a framework that combines dynamic movement primitives (DMP) that rely on behavioural cloning with a reinforcement learning (RL) based residual correction policy. The proposed solution is applied directly in task space and operates on the full pose of the robot. We show that rLfD outperforms alternatives and improves the generalisation abilities of DMPs. We evaluate this approach by training an agent to successfully perform both simulated and real world insertions of pegs, gears and plugs into respective sockets.
[D]There are no good programming languages for machine learning (except one day C# and/or Kotlin)
Hi everyone, I've been spending some time recently researching next generation languages to do machine learning in, and come to the conclusion that there aren't really any good options. I strongly suspect I'm wrong about my opinions below, and so I especially welcome anyone who has countering opinions to my own, especially if I'm just downright wrong --- I'd like to know. If you ask someone what the best programming language is, the chances are that they'll tell you that it depends what it's for --- they all have their strengths and weaknesses and quite naturally there's no programming language that is both good for data science and operating system design. When put like that, it seems like a natural thing: of course each language is a compromise, a heuristic to be optimised. If they're better for security, then naturally they'll be worse for something else.

Artificial Intelligence is the ability for computers to do things that are considered attributes of intelligence: processing language, understanding pictures, detecting patterns, etc. Interestingly, many movies and TV shows have featured predictions as to what A.I. might look like in the future. One such place is the Blockbuster franchise, Star Wars. In addition, in the Marvel Universe, most of the depictions of A.I. originate as digital assistant to either hero or villain.
