The Impact of AI on Journalism
Back in 2014, the Los Angeles Times published a report about an earthquake three minutes after it happened. This feat was possible because a staffer had developed a bot (a software robot) called Quakebot to write automated articles based on data generated by the US Geological Survey. Today, AIs write hundreds of thousands of the articles that are published by mainstream media outlets every week. At first, most of the Natural Language Generation (NLG) tools producing these articles were provided by software companies like Narrative Science. Today, many media organisations have developed in-house versions.
Creating a Podcast with A.I.
OpenAI doesn't stop to amaze me. Last year they made headlines providing GPT-2, an NLP framework with powerful writing skills. The one is GPT-3, a big-scaled language models with serious creative potential. Another one made some buzz but got lost in the background quickly -- pretty unfairly, in my opinion: JukeBox, a Generative Model for Audio. There were -- and are -- various approaches to generate music using algorithms and Artificial Intelligence.
Pro-China Propaganda Act Used Fake Followers Made With AI-Generated Images
A pro-China propaganda campaign that's been bashing the US on social media created fake followers with the help of AI-generated images. Since June, the campaign has been posting English-language videos critical of the Trump administration on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, according to research company Graphika, which has been tracking the group's activities. Graphika dubs the campaign "Spamouflage Dragon." And like other propaganda activities, the pro-China group uses fake accounts to share and post comments on its content to help it gain wider circulation. However, Graphika noticed something odd with the profile photos belonging to these fake accounts: In some cases, the headshots appear to be the work of an AI program designed to create artificial human faces. At first glance, the profile photos look legitimate.
Add Alexa to your car for ยฃ39.99 with the Echo Auto at Amazon
Hands-free news and entertainment has never been easier on-the-go thanks to the arrival of the first Amazon Echo device designed for use in the car. The Echo Auto launched back in June but if you've yet to trial it yourself, now might be the best time to invest as the device has gone into the Amazon End of Summer Sale, reduced from ยฃ49.99 down to ยฃ39.99. The Echo Auto allows drivers to play music, check the news and make calls without taking their hands off the wheel or eyes off the road. Add Alexa to your car with the new Echo Auto available on Amazon now for ยฃ39.99 Just like the rest of the Amazon Echo smart speaker range, the Echo Auto allows you to connect to Alexa. The device works through your phone's Alexa app and plays through your car's speakers via Bluetooth or an auxiliary input jack.
[R] Maximizing Computer Vision's Field of View (CVPR 2020) - Free live online lecture by the researcher
Following the amazing turn in of redditors for previous lectures, we are organizing another free zoom lecture for the reddit community. In this next lecture Dr. Marc Eder will talk about his research - Maximizing Computer Visions's Field. This talk will introduce the emerging field of 360 computer vision, and provide an overview of the spherical distortion problem, highlighting how this distortion affects many of the highest profile problems in computer vision, from deep learning to structure-from-motion and SLAM. It will survey some of the existing work on the topic, and identify 3 guiding principles that drive a general solution to the problem. Finally, we will conclude with some opportunities for further research and some big picture takeaways from work thus far.
Artificial Intelligence Is Making Arts More Artistic
The influence of Artificial Intelligence on our lives has been increasing. However apparently one area that seems untouched by it is arts, i.e. paintings, images, music, poems, stories etc. One reason for this perception is that arts is considered to be in exclusive domain of human creativity and the Mathematics heavy base of Artificial Intelligence makes it look so distant from it. However advances in Artificial Intelligence are impacting arts too. Within Artificial Intelligence, development of neural networks based on Deep Learning (DL) revolutionized its practical applications. They use multiple layers of non linear mapping and are somewhat similar to the way human brains work.
