Stanford Launches AI-powered TV News Analyzer - Liwaiwai
Cable TV news is a primary source of information for millions of Americans each day. The people that appear on cable TV news and the topics they talk about shape public opinion and culture. While many newsrooms and monitoring organizations routinely audit the content of news broadcasts, these efforts typically involve manually counting who and what is on the air. But now researchers at the Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Stanford University have launched the Stanford Cable TV News Analyzer, an interactive tool that gives the public the ability to not only search transcripts but also compute the screen time of public figures in nearly 24/7 TV news broadcasts from CNN, Fox News and MSNBC dating back to January 2010. The site is updated daily with the previous day's coverage, and enables searches of over 270,000 hours of news footage. The Analyzer increases transparency around these broadcasters' editorial decisions by using modern AI techniques to automatically measure who is on the news and what they talk about.
Microsoft will identify manipulated media with a confidence score
The pandemic and upcoming US presidential election have made misinformation even more dangerous than usual. So, as part of its Defending Democracy Program, Microsoft is rolling out new tools to combat misinformation, specifically deepfakes. The new Microsoft Video Authenticator will analyze still photo and video images and share how likely it is that the media is artificially manipulated. Users will see a confidence score, or percentage chance, that the media is manipulated, and in videos, that score will show in real-time on each frame. Microsoft says the tool works by detecting subtle elements that might not be detectable by the human eye.

How 'Coraline' studio Laiki uses Intel's AI to perfect stop motion films
Laika, the stop motion animation studio behind films like Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, isn't afraid to embrace new technology. We chronicled how it used 3D printing to add a whole new level of detail to 2012 film Paranorman. Now, the studio has its sights set on something even more ambitious: Artificial intelligence. Laika has partnered with Intel to use machine learning tools to clean up artifacts that used to require thousands of hours of manual artist labor. As Jeff Stringer, Laika's director of production technology explains, the company 3D prints shapes for facial performances, which animators painstakingly tweak to create natural and emotive motion-capture characters.
