Big data, machine learning shed light on Asian reforestation successes
Since carbon sequestration is such an important factor for mitigating climate change, it's critical to understand the efficacy of reforestation efforts and develop solid estimates of forest carbon storage capacity. However, measuring forest properties can be difficult, especially in places that aren't easily reachable. Purdue University's Jingjing Liang, an assistant professor of quantitative forest ecology and co-chair of the Forest Advanced Computing and Artificial Intelligence (FACAI) Laboratory in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, led an international team to measure forest carbon capacity in northeast Asia. Their research, which blends remote sensing, field work and machine learning, offers the most up-to-date estimates of carbon capture potential in reclusive North Korea and details the benefits of reforestation efforts over the last two decades in China and South Korea. "Because there is historically scant data from North Korea, people know little about how much carbon is stored in this region," said Liang, whose findings were published in the journal Global Change Biology.

Improvising with an AI musician
For those interested in music and AI, a session on "Human collaboration with an AI musician" at the AI for Good global summit proved to be a real treat. The session included a performance between two musicians situated on opposite sides of the globe who improvised alongside the third member of the group โ an AI "musician". Researchers and musicians have been experimenting with machine learning algorithms for a number of years now. There has been much work devoted to recreating specific styles of music, from Bach to The Beatles and from Mozart to Mogwai. This year even saw AI-assisted song writing collide with the world of Eurovision in the AI Song Contest.

How many ways to use AI for Mobile app development
Over the past decades, computer technology has been developing with an extremely high exponential rate. Humanity develops the power of computer systems implementing their application into all spheres of our daily life (production, education, medicine, economics, etc.) using devices. Thanks to the progress and continuous development of science and technology, the scope of problems to be solved are growing, and the sizes of these most used devices (computers) are decreasing. So could we assume before that computer programs/machines will be able to think, or in other words, have a certain level of thinking equivalent to the human one? Indeed, human intelligence, most likely, does not have the same computational speed as computers, but one thing is important -- a human thinks abstractly, they can solve problems, leaving some details out of the account. In addition, human intelligence can generate ideas, as well as introduce innovations.

Synthetic humans are a thing of the future, and the latest project to come along in pursuit of that is Alethea AI, a startup that can create photorealistic AI-generated avatars from a single photo. The company is unveiling its AI Avatar Studio today. You can see what they did with my photo, with my permission, in the video embedded in this story. They made me sing the I See Fire song from The Hobbit film with Ed Sheeran's voice. The company created the avatar and lip-syncing within minutes.

Machine Learning is more than just neural networks. It involves various classification and regression algorithms like KNN, SVG, etc... It recently (since 10 years more or less) became more popular due to the success of neural networks and deep learning (deep neural networks) in a variety of tasks such as speech recognition, object detection (in images) etc... A neural network is just a function, or a mapping if you prefer, of some input to some output (not much different from a basic function y 2*x 5, just much more articulated). For example, Deep Neural Networks (Neural networks with many layers) can, given an image, tell you if a particular object you are interested in is present (in which case outputs 1) or not (0).
And GPT-3 can write movie scripts!!!
GPT-3 has been used for many different things and it is doing these things with unimaginable accuracy. This language model is although not very foolproof as it can generate chunks of results which are not comprehensible or understandable by humans. Now I am flabbergasted by the fact that GPT-3 can write movie scripts and has humour and twist incorporated in it. GPT-3 has written a script for the movie named Solicitors.
