Business daily - EU rights agency warns of risks of artificial intelligence, suggests new rules

#artificialintelligence

The EU's Fundamental Rights Agency has issued a report calling for policymakers to consider new guidelines to accompany the spread of artificial intelligence technology. Among other suggestions, the agency says firms should protect privacy rights and better disclose how they use AI. Also today, Indian farmers continue to protest reforms that pave the way for private companies to play a larger role in the country's sprawling agricultural sector.

Digital Marketing: The analytical edge

#artificialintelligence

Digital marketing is a term that has emerged to describe the usage of the Internet and digital media to support marketing. By using digital technologies, marketing teams achieve marketing objectives defined in the organization. As more consumers, customers and prospects are present and active on different online platforms, digital marketing needs to encompass different kinds of media channels. Paid media, earned media and owned media needs to be considered in the competitive and complex buying environment of today's market. Paid media are channels where investment is put forward to pay for visitors through ads or search ranking.

Researchers aim to use artificial intelligence to save endangered whales in B.C.

#artificialintelligence

Researchers are aiming to "teach" a computer to recognize the sounds of resident killer whales in order to develop a warning system for preventing ships from fatally striking endangered orcas off British Columbia's coast. Steven Bergner, a computing science research associate at Simon Fraser University's Big Data Hub, said he is collecting and managing a database of sounds picked up 24 hours a day by a network of hydrophones in the Salish Sea. Marine biologists will identify the sounds of different species of whales, including humpbacks and transients, and differentiate the acoustics from other noise such as waves and boats, he said. Machine learning or artificial intelligence would help detect the presence of orcas through patterns in the data. "That (information) goes through another system that then decides whether there should be a warning that ultimately reaches the vessel pilots," Bergner said.

When Machines Design: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Aesthetics

#artificialintelligence

Are machines capable of design? Though a persistent question, it is one that increasingly accompanies discussions on architecture and the future of artificial intelligence. But what exactly is AI today? As we discover more about machine learning and generative design, we begin to see that these forms of "intelligence" extend beyond repetitive tasks and simulated operations. They've come to encompass cultural production, and in turn, design itself.

The Future of Fake News

#artificialintelligence

Is Bitcoin the revolution against unequal economic systems, or a scam and money laundry mechanism? Will artificial intelligence (AI) improve and boost humankind, or terminate our species? These questions present incompatible scenarios, but you will find supporters for all of them. They cannot be all right, so who's wrong then? Ideas spread because they are attractive, whether they are good or bad, right or wrong.

Deep Learning for Air Quality Prediction

#artificialintelligence

Traditional neural networks can't do this, and it seems like a major shortcoming. For example, imagine you want to classify what kind of event is happening at every point in a movie. It's unclear how a traditional neural network could use its reasoning about previous events in the film to inform later ones. Recurrent neural networks address this issue. They are networks with loops in them, allowing information to persist.

'Outside the Wire' teaser shows Anthony Mackie as a cyborg solider

Engadget

Netflix has been fairly quiet about Outside the Wire, a sci-fi thriller starring Anthony Mackie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Altered Carbon. But today we're getting our first look at the action thanks to a just-released teaser trailer that shows Mackie playing an android super-soldier. The plot details are still fairly fuzzy, but the video's description notes that a "disgraced drone pilot" played by co-star Damson Idris finds himself sent to a dangerous militarized zone where he partners with Mackie to locate a "doomsday device." The cyborg and human then take on huge squads of threatening robots, action ensues. The trailer is mostly focused on hyping up the impressive battle scenes rather than giving much info on how or why things are happening -- but with a month until Outside the Wire arrives on Netflix, it's safe to assume a few more trailers will arrive before then.

Reface grabs $5.5M seed led by A16z to stoke its viral face-swap video app โ€“ TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

Buzzy face-swap video app Reface, which lends users celebrity'superpowers' by turning their selfies into "eerily realistic" famous video clips at the tap of a button, has caught the attention of Andreessen Horowitz. The Silicon Valley venture firm leads a $5.5 million seed round in the deep tech entertainment startup, announced today. Reface tells us its apps (iOS and Android) have been downloaded some 70 million times since it launched in January 2020 -- up from 20M when we spoke to one of its (seven) co-founders back in August. It's also attained'top five' leading app status in around 100 countries, the US included -- as well as bagging a'top app' award in the annual Google Play best of. That kind of viral growth clip has been turning heads all over the place.

The Morning After: Netflix explains how it uses AI to sell shows

Engadget

Without revealing all its secrets, Netflix has laid out how it uses AI to market shows and predict their success. We already knew that Netflix shuffles and redesigns its interface and show tiles, apparently on the fly, to hook more viewers. But it also uses AI to compare new shows to those its country-by-country viewership watched in the past and to tap into metadata and information on non-Netflix shows, too. The explanation is a little (well, very) dry, but the AI goes beyond Netflix's own data to hedge the company's bets, for less risk, more profit. If, for example, a drama is likely to fare well in Spain, Netflix could increase marketing in the region and prep dubs and subtitles earlier than usual.
