HUSH Designs Interactive Digital Experience for HBO Max Orbit Debut at SXSW

HUSH has partnered with HBO Max to launch HBO Max Orbit, an interactive digital experience designed to introduce audiences to the streamer's vast universe of content using cutting-edge emerging technology, at SXSW Online this year. The experience uses facial tracking and voice recognition technology designed by HUSH to allow audiences to explore and interact with thousands of iconic moments, characters and stories from the HBO catalog in a personalized, intuitive way. Using Machine Learning, the experience tracks how a user is moving their face and surfaces clips of HBO Max characters matching their movements in real time. "This was an incredible creative and technical opportunity for our firm and one that was supported with energy and enthusiasm by the HBO Max team," commented David Schwarz, HUSH Partner. "Strategically, we were able to lean into the fact that HBO Max's library is unparalleled in quality and scale. Deloitte Unveils Artificial Intelligence Institute for Government

Deloitte's government and public services practice announced the new Deloitte Artificial Intelligence Institute for Government (DAIIG) today. Institute leaders outlined a set of commitments and actions to advance applied AI in the public sector by building a cross-sector community for research and shared expertise, and mentoring and growing the talent of the future. "As evidenced in the recent National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence report, advancing the use of artificial intelligence is a national imperative. While decisions and actions to accelerate AI innovation need to happen today, implementing AI brings ethical and technical challenges that are as complex as any we have faced in recent history," said Ed Van Buren, principal with Deloitte Consulting LLP and executive director of DAIIG. "Deloitte's AI Institute for Government is focused on efforts to actively help the public sector harness and shape this movement towards blending human and machine capabilities in a way that improves citizen services, promotes economic growth and recovery, and expands human opportunity" The institute is a hub for innovative perspectives, collaboration and research focused on all-things AI and related technologies for government.

In news that probably won't shock you all that much, this year's Oscars reflect a year spent mostly indoors and not in movie theaters. The Academy has announced the nominees for the 2021 Oscars, and Netflix is, again, the frontrunner, grabbing 31 nominations. All those nominations won't guarantee wins, sure, but David Fincher's Mank dominated the shortlist. Its 10 nominations included Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Gary Oldman) and Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried). Amazon picked up nominations for Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, and Hulu's The United States vs. Billie Holiday was also recognized.

When Mark Zuckerberg told Congress Facebook would use artificial intelligence to detect fake news posted on the social media site, he wasn't particularly specific about what that meant. Given my own work using image and video analytics, I suggest the company should be careful. Despite some basic potential flaws, AI can be a useful tool for spotting online propaganda – but it can also be startlingly good at creating misleading material. Researchers already know that online fake news spreads much more quickly and more widely than real news. My research has similarly found that online posts with fake medical information get more views, comments and likes than those with accurate medical content.

The genealogy platform MyHeritage created an artificial intelligence program called Deep Nostalgia. Users can see people like Frederick Douglass come alive with the click of a button. He blinks and nods as if he were just alive yesterday and hadn't died in 1895, years before film recording became commonplace. Users can to supply old photos of their loved ones, and the program uses deep learning to apply predetermined movements to their facial features.
