Like many stories about people trying to help fix the internet, this one begins in the aftermath of 2016. From his home in Ireland, Conor Brady had watched the Brexit vote and the election of Donald Trump with disbelief. In his view, the prominence of false stories during each election--whether about Muslim immigrants or Hillary Clinton's health--was the direct consequence of a hollowed-out news industry without the resources to check the spread of disinformation. At the time, Conor's son, Neil--also a former journalist--was working as a digital policy analyst at the Institute of International and European Affairs, researching neural networks and machine learning. The two got to thinking.

But like it or not, AI technologies and intelligent systems will make huge advances in the next two decades--revolutionizing medicine, entertainment, and transport; transforming jobs and markets; enabling many new products and tools; and vastly increasing the amount of information that governments and companies have about individuals. Should we cherish and look forward to these developments, or fear them? Current AI research is too narrowly focused on making advances in a limited set of domains and pays insufficient attention to its disruptive effects on the very fabric of society. There are reasons to be concerned. If AI technology continues to develop along its current path, it is likely to create social upheaval for at least two reasons. For one, AI will affect the future of jobs. Our current trajectory automates work to an excessive degree while refusing to invest in human productivity; further advances will displace workers and fail to create new opportunities (and, in the process, miss out on AI's full potential to enhance productivity). For another, AI may undermine democracy and individual freedoms. Each of these directions is alarming, and the two together are ominous. Shared prosperity and democratic political participation do not just critically reinforce each other: they are the two backbones of our modern society.

The technology is related to deepfaking, which uses AI to paste one person's face onto someone else. It promises to allow directors to effectively reshoot movies in different languages, making foreign versions less jarring for audiences and more faithful to the original.

Olivia Rodrigo's latest single, "Good 4 U," comes from a long lineage of teen girl pop rock--that 2007 Radio Disney sound, as fellow young rocker Willow Smith put it. The 18-year-old Rodrigo's trio of singles have garnered praise for paying homage to her female Disney Channel predecessors, who similarly explored the emotional spectrum of girlhood through their music, chronicling its cheesy jubilance, frustration, pettiness, adventurousness, and confusion. For young girls in the 2000s, Disney-produced pop rock provided an outlet for those budding teenage feelings of rage against various "machines," defined as anything from annoying boys to the restrictions of youth--"they just don't understand me" is perhaps the catchphrase of ages 12 to 19. At almost 21 years old, barely two years removed from this demographic, I'm still desperately on the hunt for self-definition; it's an endless quest that, like all journeys, deserves a proper soundtrack. Radio Disney rock spoke to a generation of girls who grew up watching blogs, tabloids, and TV news conduct public crucifixions of women for daring to have fun, feel human emotions, or have a body--basically, for existing.

I have trained a model through PyTorch and wish to bring it into production through a Windows desktop app for real-time inference. My current plan is to convert my PyTorch model to a TorchScript. Then in actual C inference, I'll then use LibTorch to call the TorchScript-formatted model. My goal is to integrate this into a desktop app and run it in real-time on a stream of data. Also, I plan on only running on CPU, not GPU.

So my take here is that the reasons given dont justify the decision. This is not fortran specific, but just that the choice to use it should have some rationale that goes beyond some impression of the language's user base. One thing that you frankly just have to consider, no ifs and or buts, is how you're going to onboard new people. This is a big hurdle for one of my favorite languages, BTW, Scala, where my company literally gave up doing new things in Scala because onboarding people had too high of a failure rate. If you want to do fortran it's fine I guess.

The first depiction of an AI character in cinematic history came along in Fritz Lang's "Metropolis," which debuted in 1927. The film was one of the very first sprawling special effect-driven spectacles, centering on workers in a far-future dystopia, where stark class divisions keep workers under the wealthy's thumb, and where reliance on machinery robs laborers of their humanity. It's considered one of the most important science fiction films ever made and imbues its AI with a villainous flair. In "Metropolis," an inventor decides to use his new robot, known as the Maschinenmensch, to take over the city. In order to do so, he disguises the robot as a young woman named Maria.


China reveals first Mars photos taken by the Zhurong rover

China's space agency has released the first photos taken by the Zhurong rover on Mars, showing parts of its lander and the red planet itself. The Tianwen-1 mission arrived at its destination on May 15th, making China the second nation to successfully soft-land on Mars after the US. One of the photos is a colored image (above) taken by the navigation camera mounted at the rear of the rover. It features Zhurong's solar panels and unfolded antennae, along with a view of the planet's red soil and rocks. The other photo (below) is a black-and-white image taken by an obstacle avoidance camera installed in front of the rover. It was captured using a wide-angle lens, so it not only shows a ramp from the lander extending to the surface of the planet, but also the Martian horizon.


Microsoft used AI to generate a never-ending remix of Warren Hue's new song

Microsoft has a prolific history of working with entertainers and artists to add a little taste of tech into their creations, and is continuing that with Indonesian singer and producer Warren Hue. The company teamed up with Asian media company and record label 88rising to create an AI-generated "never-ending remix" of Hue's latest track Too Many Tears. You can check out the audio-visual experience on TooManyTears.AI, where you'll see images from the San Gabriel Valley set to remix stems from Hue's song. This is Microsoft's third AI-based music project, and its first with electronic music. The remix will adapt to the time of day for different moods in the morning and night, but it's also attempting to create a "more pastoral landscape."
