The Road to Virtual Safety Simulations and Crash Testing

#artificialintelligence

Virtual testing is expanding its reach to create simulations of the objects in our lives for faster, less expensive, and less wasteful safety – and that will save businesses money and safeguard their reputations. Sure, vehicles are safer than they've ever been. The automotive industry has used decades of crash-testing data to make cars safer and minimize the impact of accidents. But while vehicular design has changed drastically since Cadillacs ruled the roads, crash testing has evolved more slowly. The latest cars use different materials, are structured differently, and have different safety equipment. Yet crash test dummies are based on the average male in the 1970s – 5 foot, 9 inches tall and 171 pounds – and this model drives vehicle safety designs.

JJ Abrams says the 'Portal' movie is still in the works

Engadget

JJ Abrams first floated the possibility of a Portal movie eight years ago, but there hasn't been much noise about it since. Don't worry, though -- it's finally moving forward. Abrams told IGN that a script for the Portal flick is currently in progress at Warner Bros., and that the team was thrilled with the angle for the production. The games' narrow storytelling focus left "huge" potential for the movie, according to Abrams. Abrams didn't name the writers or anyone else attached to the production, but he did recognize the pressure to bring back JK Simmons for a live action take on Aperture Science founder Cave Johnson.

#artificialintelligence

Netra uses artificial intelligence to help companies understand and organize their video content. Netra, co-founded by Shashi Kant SM '06, uses artificial intelligence to help companies sort and manage video content. At any given moment, many thousands of new videos are being posted to sites like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. An increasing number of those videos are being recorded and streamed live. But tech and media companies still struggle to understand what's going in all that content.

AnyClip snaps up $47M for its video search and analytics technology – TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

Video is, quite literally, what gets the world moving online these days, expected to account for 82% of all IP traffic this year. Today a startup that has built a set of tools to help better parse, index and ultimately discover that trove of content is announcing a big round of funding to expand its business after seeing 600% growth in the last year. AnyClip -- which combines artificial intelligence with more standard search tools to provide better video analytics for content providers to improve how those videos can be used and viewed -- has raised $47 million, money that it will be using to build out its platform and where it can be applied. The funding is being led by JVP, with La Maison, Bank Mizrahi and internal investors also participating. The company is not officially disclosing its valuation but has raised $70 million to date and I understand from reliable sources that it is around $300 million.
