An 18-year-old Ohio man was being praised for saving a mother and her 10-year-old son at a North Carolina beach over the Fourth of July weekend – in a rescue that was caught on video. Travis Shrout of Stow, near Cleveland, said he had swum out pretty far at Topsail Beach where his family was vacationing on July 3 when he noticed the woman and her son struggling in the water, FOX 8 of Cleveland reported. Shrout's family had gotten out of the water but family friend Thad Unkefer wanted to test his drone's tracking features, so Shrout decided to get back in, he told the station.

A documentary on the late Anthony Bourdain is drawing attention for its use of artificial intelligence. A New Yorker review of Roadrunner, a documentary on late chef and travel documentarian Anthony Bourdain, is getting plenty of attention thanks to one anecdote mentioned toward the end. In the article, published Thursday, reporter Helen Rosner describes a scene in the film in which artist David Choe, a friend of Bourdain's, reads an e-mail from the late chef, who died by suicide in 2018. The scene starts with Choe's voice before transitioning to Bourdain's, which says, "and my life is sort of shit now. You are successful, and I am successful, and I'm wondering: Are you happy?" Rosner says she asked filmmaker Morgan Neville how he'd found a recording of Bourdain reading the email.

Netflix Inc.'s foray into gaming is raising more eyebrows than excitement among analysts. Though there's long been speculation that Netflix might move into video games, Wednesday's news that it had hired an executive to lead the effort -- and would start adding titles to its streaming platform in the next year -- came as a surprise to many. The Los Gatos, California-based company doesn't have the infrastructure or the expertise to create or support top-tier games, analysts said. And that capability won't be easy to build. "They don't have a game catalog -- they haven't cultivated a base of gamers in their audience," said Lewis Ward, research director for gaming at IDC. "And they don't have an internal studio or infrastructure to handle a service."

An AI voice generation method was used for the latest Anthony Bourdain documentary, and it aims to capture something that the late personality said, bordering greatly on deepfake. However, these words were never actually said on recording or any media by the late celebrity chef and are something which the director wants to be part of the film. Over the past months and during the pandemic, Deepfake has been used to bring fake news and mislead people into believing a lot of different things on the internet. It already caused alarm to the government, and some of which were taken down by social media platforms as they malign people. According to an interview by The New Yorker, Director Morgan Neville has revealed that he has used artificial intelligence to generate a copy of the voice of the late Anthony Bourdain, to be included in his film.

In a new documentary, Roadrunner, about the life and tragic death of Anthony Bourdain, there are a few lines of dialogue in Bourdain's voice that he might not have ever said out loud. Filmmaker Morgan Neville used AI technology to digitally re-create Anthony Bourdain's voice and have the software synthesize the audio of three quotes from the late chef and television host, Neville told the New Yorker. The deepfaked voice was discovered when the New Yorker's Helen Rosner asked how the filmmaker got a clip of Bourdain's voice reading an email he had sent to a friend. Neville said he had contacted an AI company and supplied it with a dozen hours of Bourdain speaking. " ... and my life is sort of shit now. You are successful, and I am successful, and I'm wondering: Are you happy?" Bourdain wrote in an email, and an AI algorithm later narrated an approximation of his voice.

On July 16th, Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain will open in US theatres. Like many documentaries, the film pieces together archival footage, including interviews and show outtakes, to attempt to tell the story of its subject in their own words. It also includes words Bourdain never spoke to a camera before his death by suicide in 2018, and yet you'll hear his voice saying them. In an interview with The New Yorker, the film's director, Morgan Neville, said there were three quotes he wanted Bourdain to narrate where there were no recordings, and so he recreated them with software instead. "I created an AI model of his voice," he told the magazine.

Netflix has hired veteran video game executive Mike Verdu, signaling the video streaming service is poised to expand into another fertile field of entertainment. Neural machine translation (NMT), or AI techniques that can translate between languages, is in widespread use today owing to its robustness and versatility. But it's been shown that NMT systems can be manipulated if provided prompts containing certain words, phrases, or alphanumeric symbols. For example, in 2015, Google fixed a bug that caused Google Translate to offer homophobic slurs like "poof" and "queen" to those translating the word "gay" from English into Spanish, French, or Portuguese. In another glitch, Reddit users discovered that typing repeated words like "dog" into Translate and asking the system to translate into English yielded "doomsday predictions." A new study from researchers at the University of Melbourne, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon suggests that NMT systems are even more vulnerable than previously believed.
