Oscar-winning creative studio Framestore and Bournemouth University are seeking two research fellows to help drive forward the future of visual effects. In the new documentary "Roadrunner" about the life of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, the filmmakers made a controversial choice. The director, Morgan Neville, commissioned a software company to re-create Bourdain's voice digitally, synthesizing three lines of voice-over. The lines were statements that Bourdain wrote but never uttered before his death in 2018. The artificial-intelligence technology used to craft the fictitious audio is called "deepfake," and it has set off a debate online since food writer Helen Rosner published a piece in the New Yorker last week, "The Ethics of a Deepfake Anthony Bourdain Voice," interviewing Mr. Neville about the decision. While the audiovisual technology that allows this kind of trickery has long been in development, the word "deepfake" first emerged in late 2017.

By using publications from Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), Fosso Wamba and his colleagues published an interesting and comprehensive paper in Technological Forecasting and Social Change to explore the structure and dynamics of artificial intelligence (AI) scholarship. Data demonstrated in Fosso Wamba's study implied that the year 1991 seemed to be a "watershed" of AI research. This research note tried to uncover the 1991 phenomenon from the perspective of database limitation by probing the limitations of search in abstract/author keywords/keywords plus fields of WoSCC empirically. The low availability rates of abstract/author keywords/keywords plus information in WoSCC found in this study can explain the "watershed" phenomenon of AI scholarship in 1991 to a large extent. Some other caveats for the use of WoSCC in old literature retrieval and historical bibliometric analysis were also mentioned in the discussion section. This research note complements Fosso Wamba and his colleagues' study and also helps avoid improper interpretation in the use of WoSCC in old literature retrieval and historical bibliometric analysis.

Night Shyamalan's new film, "Old" (which opens in theatres on Friday), is different. His frequent artistic pitfall is complication--the burdening of stories with extravagant yet undeveloped byways in order to endow them with ostensible significance and to stoke exaggerated effects. With "Old," facing the constraints of filming during the pandemic--on a project that he'd nonetheless planned before it--Shyamalan has created a splendid throwback of a science-fiction thriller that develops a simple idea with stark vigor and conveys the straight-faced glee of realizing the straightforward logic of its enticing absurdity.
