By that same logic, when Hollywood actors start tweeting about a once-obscure part of artificial intelligence (A.I.), you know that something big is happening, too. That's exactly what occurred recently when Zach Braff, the actor-director still best known for his performance as J.D. on the medical comedy series Scrubs, recorded himself reading a Scrubs-style monolog written by an A.I. "What is a hospital?" Braff reads, adopting the thoughtful tone J.D. used to wrap up each episode in the series. "A hospital is a lot like a high school: the most amazing man is dying, and you're the only one who wants to steal stuff from his dad. Being in a hospital is a lot like being in a sorority. You have greasers and surgeons. And even though it sucks about Doctor Tapioca, not even that's sad."
Musician sells rights to deepfake her voice using NFTs
American musician and composer Holly Herndon seems to be capitalizing on the principle of deep-fake technology by allowing fans to use a digital version of herself to create original artwork they can then sell. According to a Thursday announcement from Herndon on Twitter, users who want to make their own deepfakes using the musician's unique voice and image will have the opportunity to sell their minted creations using nonfungible token, or NFT, marketplace Zora. Herndon said fans can submit their digital copies to be approved by the project's DAO and would receive 50% of any auction profits. The project said it would initially release three "genesis" Holly NFTs along with submissions from the public, which will be minted using a smart contract and auctioned on Zora next month. Users will receive half of any profits, with 40% given to the DAO and the remainder to Herndon herself.

Now, the forthcoming version of iOS has libertarians, privacy campaigners and "thin-end-of-the-wedge" worriers in a spin. It also has busy mainstream journalists struggling to find headline-friendly summaries of what Apple has in store for us. "Apple is prying into iPhones to find sexual predators, but privacy activists worry governments could weaponise the feature" was how the venerable Washington Post initially reported it.
Warner Bros. 'Reminiscence' promo uses deepfake tech to put you in the trailer
If you want to see yourself on screen with Hugh Jackman, this is your chance. The promo for Warner Bros. upcoming Reminiscence movie uses deepfake technology to turn a photo of your face -- or anybody's face, really -- into a short video sequence with the star. According to Protocol, a media startup called D-ID created the promo for the film. D-ID reportedly started out wanting to develop technology that can protect consumers against facial recognition, but then it realized that its tech could also be used to optimize deepfakes. For this particular project, the firm created a website for the experience, where you'll be asked for your name and for a photo.

The list of companies working on the development of emotion recognition technology is growing exponentially, and investors appear to be excited when it comes to emotionally intelligent tech. The industry is undoubtedly booming, with estimates predicting that the global emotional intelligence market will grow to $64m by 2027. The most common form of emotion detection software uses cameras to record and analyse facial expressions, body movements and gestures to detect how people are feeling.

In Free Guy, the new film from director Shawn Levy and screenwriters Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, Ryan Reynolds plays an NPC--a non-playable character--from a video game. Over the course of the movie, Reynolds' character becomes conscious, falls in love, and eventually learns how to use lightsabers, Captain America's shield, and a grab-bag of intellectual property controlled or licensed for the movie by the Walt Disney Company. It's not the first time NPCs have been featured on-screen, but no other film has spent as much time exploring their inner lives. To find out how NPCs felt about their moment in the spotlight, I travelled to several video game universes and asked any NPC I could find what they thought about Free Guy. Here's what they told me.
DEXTER: Deep Encoding of External Knowledge for Named Entity Recognition in Virtual Assistants

Named entity recognition (NER) is usually developed and tested on text from well-written sources. However, in intelligent voice assistants, where NER is an important component, input to NER may be noisy because of user or speech recognition error. In applications, entity labels may change frequently, and non-textual properties like topicality or popularity may be needed to choose among alternatives. We describe a NER system intended to address these problems. We test and train this system on a proprietary user-derived dataset. We compare with a baseline text-only NER system; the baseline enhanced with external gazetteers; and the baseline enhanced with the search and indirect labelling techniques we describe below. The final configuration gives around 6% reduction in NER error rate. We also show that this technique improves related tasks, such as semantic parsing, with an improvement of up to 5% in error rate.
GAN Computers Generate Arts? A Survey on Visual Arts, Music, and Literary Text Generation using Generative Adversarial Network
"Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth." - Pablo Picasso. For centuries, humans have dedicated themselves to producing arts to convey their imagination. The advancement in technology and deep learning in particular, has caught the attention of many researchers trying to investigate whether art generation is possible by computers and algorithms. Using generative adversarial networks (GANs), applications such as synthesizing photorealistic human faces and creating captions automatically from images were realized. This survey takes a comprehensive look at the recent works using GANs for generating visual arts, music, and literary text. A performance comparison and description of the various GAN architecture are also presented. Finally, some of the key challenges in art generation using GANs are highlighted along with recommendations for future work.
