How machine learning powers Facebook's News Feed ranking algorithm
Now that we have all the predictions, we can combine them into a single score. To do this, multiple passes are needed to save computational power and to apply rules, such as content type diversity (i.e., content type should be varied so that viewers don't see redundant content types, such as multiple videos, one after another), that depend on an initial ranking score. First, certain integrity processes are applied to every post. These are designed to determine which integrity detection measures, if any, need to be applied to the stories selected for ranking. Then, in pass 0, a lightweight model is run to select approximately 500 of the most relevant posts for Juan that are eligible for ranking.
Interpretable Propaganda Detection in News Articles

Online users today are exposed to misleading and propagandistic news articles and media posts on a daily basis. To counter thus, a number of approaches have been designed aiming to achieve a healthier and safer online news and media consumption. Automatic systems are able to support humans in detecting such content; yet, a major impediment to their broad adoption is that besides being accurate, the decisions of such systems need also to be interpretable in order to be trusted and widely adopted by users. Since misleading and propagandistic content influences readers through the use of a number of deception techniques, we propose to detect and to show the use of such techniques as a way to offer interpretability. In particular, we define qualitatively descriptive features and we analyze their suitability for detecting deception techniques. We further show that our interpretable features can be easily combined with pre-trained language models, yielding state-of-the-art results.
XiaoIce robot users have ended up in therapy for falling in love with their Artificial Intelligence
The love between a human and a robot is no longer just the plot of a science fiction movie or'Black Mirror' . Futuristic predictions caught up with us and the proof of this is that cases have been reported of users ending up in psychological therapy for falling in love with the robot XiaoIce, the most popular virtual assistant with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in China. XiaoIce is an advanced AI system, designed as a chatbot to create emotional bonds with its users, and is found on most Chinese smartphones and social platforms. Today, XiaoIce has 150 million users in China alone, and 660 million worldwide. According to Li Di, founder and CEO of the firm, it currently attends about 60% of global interactions between humans and AI, placing it among the top virtual assistants in the market, according to statements to AFP.

To make that happen, Felix & Paul Studios, one of the series' creators, customized a virtual reality camera and attached it to the Canadarm2 robot to capture 3D, 360-degree scenes from outside the space station. Felix & Paul's "Outer Space Camera" is a customized version of the commercially available Z-Cam V1 Pro.
Socially Responsible AI Algorithms: Issues, Purposes, and Challenges

In the current era, people and society have grown increasingly reliant on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. AI has the potential to drive us towards a future in which all of humanity flourishes. It also comes with substantial risks for oppression and calamity. Discussions about whether we should (re)trust AI have repeatedly emerged in recent years and in many quarters, including industry, academia, healthcare, services, and so on. Technologists and AI researchers have a responsibility to develop trustworthy AI systems. They have responded with great effort to design more responsible AI algorithms. However, existing technical solutions are narrow in scope and have been primarily directed towards algorithms for scoring or classification tasks, with an emphasis on fairness and unwanted bias. To build long-lasting trust between AI and human beings, we argue that the key is to think beyond algorithmic fairness and connect major aspects of AI that potentially cause AI’s indifferent behavior. In this survey, we provide a systematic framework of Socially Responsible AI Algorithms that aims to examine the subjects of AI indifference and the need for socially responsible AI algorithms, define the objectives, and introduce the means by which we may achieve these objectives. We further discuss how to leverage this framework to improve societal well-being through protection, information, and prevention/mitigation. This article appears in the special track on AI & Society.
