AI and music festival brings together musicians, artists and scientists
The AI and Music S T ARTS Festival, organised by Sónar, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and Betevé on 27-28 October comprised more than 100 activities that combined music and AI. The event gathered musicians, scientists and artists from across the world who gave exclusive live presentations of their work and experiments with AI. One of the main initiatives of the AI and Music S T ARTS Festival, and one which transcended the event, was the creation of Thinking Lab, an applied research lab where participants can explore the interrelation between AI and musical creativity, and, ultimately, the interaction between people and machines. The Thinking Lab is led by the Intelligent Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (IDEAI-UPC) and the Centre for Image and Multimedia Technology (CITM), both at UPC, and coordinated together with Sónar. In this space of debate and co-creation, which has been in place since April, scientists, artists and other professionals exchange experiences and knowledge that has contributed to some of the presentations and performances at the festival.
Identifying Sellers of Illicit Narcotics on Soundcloud.com Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation
Previously, I developed a framework for identifying sellers of illicit narcotics advertising on Soundcloud.com. This framework scraped comments and identified comments that were advertising drugs through a simple keyword search. While this framework did well due to the similar structure of the comments, I wanted to try to improve this framework by using Latent Dirichlet Allocation. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is a natural language processing (NLP) model for learning abstract topics of text, also known as topic modeling. LDA will cluster documents into topics, allowing us to classify comments and find comments that are advertising the sale of narcotics.
The Lab of the Future May Be Here Before We Know It
Visions for the lab of the future have evolved over the past few decades, and while individual instruments and processes have benefited from digital tools like automation and analytics, lab research has changed far less than many would have predicted. However, with an increasingly broad and powerful digital toolkit that includes tools like artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, the lab of the future -- one that is significantly more automated, efficient, and effective -- may be closer to reality. However, starting around 2013, there has been a steady growth in innovation interest, showing that the space may be in a phase where it could lead to a significant impact. "While each category has its own defining features, there is overlap and synergy between the categories," explains Cole McCollum, Analyst at Lux Research and lead author of the report. "For example, lab automation can be used to collect experimental data, which can then be fed into informatics systems to ultimately generate knowledge."
Video Games Inspire a Generation of Classical Music Fans
After graduating from the Osaka College of Music in 1988, Yoko Shimomura was torn between career paths. Classically trained since the age of 3 and raised in a family of piano players, Shimomura had studied to become a piano teacher. But when she wasn't studying or playing the piano, Shimomura was popping coins at her local arcade or stomping on Goombas in Super Mario Bros. It was Koji Kondo's infectious melodies in the original Super Mario Bros. that first piqued Shimomura's interest in video game music. Not long after, Koichi Sugiyama's classical score for the RPG Dragon Quest inspired her to marry her love for video games and classical music.
In this case, politics is a (video) game
It's been a long couple of years in politics. And it can be frustrating to feel like politicians treat it like a game, with people as pawns. But a political journalist thinks there may be some appeal in a new strategy game that gives players a front-row seat to the ins and outs of politics in a fictional political world. The game tackles the good, the bad -- and yes, the very, very ugly. It's called Political Arena and its creator is Eliot Nelson, a journalist who wrote a political newsletter for HuffPost until 2018.
