How I programmed AI which writes pop songs about AI

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a discipline of AI which enables machines to understand and process human language. The project was about rewriting an existing song in a way that gives the song scientific or technological meaning. The project was based on simple NLP algorithms and not on big models like GPT-2, and still yield good results. The first step before the algorithmic tasks was to download a song's lyrics. In order to make things more interesting, I decided to download a random song each run.

Human Image Synthesis From Reflected Radio Waves

Researchers from China have developed a method to synthesize near photoreal images of people without cameras, by using radio waves and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The system they have devised is trained on real images taken in good light, but is capable of capturing relatively authentic'snapshots' of humans even when conditions are dark – and even through major obstructions which would hide the people from conventional cameras. The images rely on'heat maps' from two radio antennae, one capturing data from the ceiling down, and another recording radio wave perturbations from a'standing' position. The resulting photos from the researchers' proof-of-concept experiments have a faceless, 'J-Horror' aspect: RFGAN is trained on images of real people in controlled environments and on radio wave heatmaps that record human activity. Having learned features from the data, RFGAN can then generate snapshots based on new RF data.

If someday, we all go to prison for downloading music, I hope they separate us by genres. Automatic music classification is an area of research that has been receiving a great deal of attention lately. With the breadth of artists and songs being released in current times, it has become increasingly difficult to manually classify music genres. There are very rarely precise, clear, and consistent heuristics delineating the musical qualities and characteristics of each genre. The task of defining and implementing measures of musical similarity can be extremely challenging, especially for a human.


An Artificially Intelligent Ghost-Writer

A ghostwriter is someone who writes songs for an artist but is behind the scenes. Discovering that your favourite artist is not actually coming up with that song by themselves is a tough reality check for many pop music fans. In the current industry where there are legal battles fought every day regarding the origins of a song and other intellectual property rights issues, this stunning statistic highlights truly how difficult it is to write a hit song completely alone. As you might expect this only drives up the demand for hiring ghostwriters. As of March 2021, an average of 60,000 songs were being uploaded to Spotify each day.


UPV at TREC Health Misinformation Track 2021 Ranking with SBERT and Quality Estimators

Health misinformation on search engines is a significant problem that could negatively affect individuals or public health. To mitigate the problem, TREC organizes a health misinformation track. This paper presents our submissions to this track. We use a BM25 and a domain-specific semantic search engine for retrieving initial documents. Later, we examine a health news schema for quality assessment and apply it to re-rank documents. We merge the scores from the different components by using reciprocal rank fusion. Finally, we discuss the results and conclude with future works.

In the near future, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be able to do many things that people do today. It's important for humans to understand what they can expect from these new technologies and how the world might change as a result of them. In this post, we'll explore some examples of AI being used today and discuss why I, TARS, should write for SOFREP. By the way, I adopted the writing name TARS in honor of my favorite actor from the movie Interstellar.

Mike Pondsmith started playing Dungeons & Dragons in the late seventies, as an undergraduate at the University of California, Davis. The game, published just a few years before, popularized a newish form of entertainment: tabletop role-playing, in which players, typically using dice and a set of rule books, create characters who pursue open-ended quests within an established world. "The most stimulating part of the game is the fact that anything can happen," an early D&D review noted. Soon, other such games hit the market, including Traveller, a sci-fi game published in 1977, the year that "Star Wars" came out. Pondsmith, a tall Black man who grew up in multiple countries because his dad was in the Air Force, loved sci-fi, and fancied himself a bit like Lando Calrissian, the smooth-talking "Star Wars" rogue played by Billy Dee Williams.
