In a recent segment on COVID Safety, CNN's Dr. Leana Wen admitted cloth masks don't stop transmission of the virus. Today in New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he doesn't believe in shutdowns despite having shut down the city for months. He then added "I also oppose letting criminals roam free to murder people." Chris Tucker turned down a $10 million payday for a sequel to the awesome movie Friday, saying he's too mature to be seen behaving badly on screen anymore.
American University: Using Statistics to Aid in the Fight Against Misinformation
An American University math professor and his team created a statistical model that can be used to detect misinformation in social posts. The model also avoids the problem of black boxes that occur in machine learning. With the use of algorithms and computer models, machine learning is increasingly playing a role in helping to stop the spread of misinformation, but a main challenge for scientists is the black box of unknowability, where researchers don't understand how the machine arrives at the same decision as human trainers. Using a Twitter dataset with misinformation tweets about COVID-19, Zois Boukouvalas, assistant professor in AU's Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences, shows how statistical models can detect misinformation in social media during events like a pandemic or a natural disaster. In newly published research, Boukouvalas and his colleagues, including AU student Caitlin Moroney and Computer Science Prof. Nathalie Japkowicz, also show how the model's decisions align with those made by humans.

We apply P-Tree to generate a stochastic discount factor model and test assets for cross-sectional asset pricing. Unlike other tree algorithms, P-Trees accommodate imbalanced panels of asset returns and grow under the no-arbitrage condition.

Rise of the Machines: Are We Entering 'Dangerous Territory' with Machines That Replace God?
High-tech and artificial intelligence are fast becoming a big part of our daily lives. Author Wallace Henley says if we are not careful, American society could easily enter into "dangerous territory," a less human world that forgets the preeminence of God. "We have these machines emerging and people are beginning to worship those machines," Henley explained. "There's actually an A.I. church now and there's another technology specialist who said if this thing can go a billion times faster than the human brain, this machine, than the only thing that we can call it is God."
