In 2020, the American poet Andrew Brown gave a student the following assignment: write a poem from the point of view of a cloud looking down on two warring cities. "I think I'll start to rain, Because I don't think I can stand the pain, Well, Brown's'student' turned out to be a computer program, not a human. The program, called GPT-3, is one of the most powerful AI language models ever made. Created in 2020 by the research firm OpenAI, its development has cost tens of millions of dollars. Trained on 200 billion words from books, articles, and websites, GPT-3 can generate fluent streams of text on any topic you can imagine. Companies like Amazon, Netflix, Spotify, and LinkedIn feed our personal preferences into them to create targeted recommendations.

The technology boom amidst the pandemic has already hit 2022, creating another record with Apple. This week, the company was valued at $3 trillion, the first US company to reach this growth. This follows Apple's tremendous market growth that has risen by 38% since the start of 2021 and tripled in value in under four years. The Guardian estimated the valuation is equivalent to the combined value of Boeing, Coca-Cola, Disney, Exxon-Mobil, McDonald's, Netflix and Walmart. While the growth has not been sustained, the company has surely been a disruptor in the technology market with their breakthrough innovations for decades.

The artificial intelligence (AI) that is already all around us cannot safely drive a car by himself, nor can they write compelling scripts. Still, every day the research to make them more capable gets new results, and in some cases, anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can help teach them something. Both Google and Microsoft have put online some experiments (interpretable as "games") with which to try to understand how to teach a computer to learn, or simply to get an idea of how smart some AI systems that already exist are. Google's can be found on the A.I. Experiments platform, while Microsoft's were mostly created by the Microsoft Garage research community. They are, of course, not the first such experiments.

Carnegie Mellon University Professor of Materials Science and Engineering Elizabeth Holm and materials science and engineering doctoral student Bo Lei have adopted computer vision methods for microstructural images that not only require a fraction of the data deep learning typically relies on, but can save materials researchers an abundance of time and money. Quality control in materials processing requires the analysis and classification of complex material microstructures. For instance, the properties of some high-strength steels depend on the amount of lath-type bainite in the material. However, the process of identifying bainite in microstructural images is time-consuming and expensive as researchers must first use two types of microscopy to take a closer look and then rely on their own expertise to identify bainitic regions.
