Back in 1982, Andy Warhol was, somewhat infamously, turned into a robot. The machine was made by a Disney Imagineering veteran for a project that never really took off, but Warhol liked his animatronic self. "Machines have less problems," he once said. "I'd like to be a machine, wouldn't you?" The artist, who died in 1987, was a master of his own cult of personality, and the robot was practically a manifestation of how the world perceived him: meticulously crafted, if a bit rigid and monotone in his conversational style.

Comparisons between Kogonada's new film, "After Yang," and his earlier one, "Columbus," are inevitable, and their differences obscure the big idea that unites them. "After Yang" is a science-fiction film, set in a vague future time at an unspecified place, seemingly in the United States; its title character is an android, or "technosapien." "Columbus," his first feature, from 2017, is set in its own present day, in the real-life city of Columbus, Indiana, and centered on a young woman played by Haley Lu Richardson. "After Yang" is a synthetic work of dystopian imagination, and "Columbus" is a carefully realistic view of its place and time. Nonetheless, the two films are propelled by the same impulse: the artistic basis of mental life, the politics of aesthetics.

I was reading a document late in the night and reached a point where I wasn't going beyond one paragraph. I suddenly wished someone would read out the document for me and I just listen. Adobe reader came to memory and I immediately converted the word document to PDF and turned on the Read-Out-Loud function. Well it helped but not quite because of a few limitations. I got thinking of how machines are taking over human roles so fast.

During the pandemic, members of the reddit & discord r/robotics community rallied to organize an online showcase for members of our community. What was originally envisioned as a half-day event with one mildly interesting guest speaker turned out to be a two day event with an incredible roster of participants from across the world.
