But a new survey shows Americans are still torn about how it may continue to impact society. The nonpartisan Pew Research Center surveyed more than 10,000 adults and found that their support of artificial intelligence varied, depending on its use.

Machines do everything for them, from the hoverchairs that carry them around, to the robots that prepare their food. Glued to their screens all day, which have taken control of their lives and decisions, humans exhibit lazy behaviors like video chatting the person physically next to them.

Running AI these days is increasingly simple due to the hard work of open source contributors producing top-notch libraries out there, and research groups opening up their work so others can build on it. One key library doing that is HuggingFace's Transformers library. HuggingFace are a startup building, amongst other NLP-related products, a library and model ecosystem that allows almost anyone to quickly and easily set up AI-powered chat bots that can consume or produce natural language. If you feed it enough data, it can build up an ability to recognize the patterns in the english language, to the extent that if you ask it to repeat the pattern, not only will it generate mostly correct English grammar, it might also from time to time generate a coherent sentence!

When Henny Admoni tells people she's a roboticist who primarily studies humans, she gets strange looks. "It might seem a little weird," Admoni says, "but the goal of my research is to understand how to make robots good for people." Admoni leads the Human and Robot Partners Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, where, along with a team of researchers, she studies the ways robots and AI can improve people's lives. The lab has worked on robotic arms that assist people in eating food and preparing meals; they've observed robots that encourage artists to think outside the box, and they've looked at how robots can help search and rescue teams collaborate more effectively. With a library of published papers, awards, and international speaking engagements under her belt, one might think that, for Admoni, robotics has been a lifelong passion.
