Choose or Die review – gory Netflix video game horror

The Guardian

It's strange that the silly but mostly tolerable horror Choose or Die was an acquisition rather than a homegrown Netflix original given how much it seems algorithmically modeled for the notoriously formula-obsessed platform. It stars Asa Butterfield, an in-house star thanks to the success of Sex Education. It also focuses on a cursed video game, making it a close cousin to the streamer's interactive Black Mirror hit Bandersnatch. It's a film destined to live its days in the "if you like" container. It'll probably fare well there as fans of the above might find just about enough here to play with although they might, like me, be a little surprised at just how nasty this quickie horror is, made with closer attention to the gore quotient than any level of creativity.

Severance Is a Nightmare Vision of Office Life

WIRED

The Apple TV series Severance presents a world in which office workers have their minds split into two personalities--one who only remembers what happens at work and one who only remembers what happens outside of it. Science fiction author John Kessel loves the show's inventive premise. "After we watched the first episode, I said to my wife, 'This is one of the smartest shows I've seen in a long time,'" Kessel says in Episode 509 of the Geek's Guide to the Galaxy podcast. "I rank it--at least through this first season--as highly as I do things like Breaking Bad. I really think it's classic."

DALL·E 2's AI-generated art is blowing our minds

#artificialintelligence

Need an illustration of a wise cat meditating in the Himalayas searching for enlightenment but don't have any oil paints? On Wednesday, OpenAI unveiled the DALL·E 2 system, which can generate artistic images from a phrase. According to the OpenAI blog, the name DALL·E is "a portmanteau of the artist Salvador Dalí and Pixar's WALL·E." The recently-released second version expands upon the original DALL·E, which debuted in January 2021. It features higher-resolution images (1024 x 1024 pixels compared to 256 x 256 pixels) and lower-latency.

Ethical hacking can improve AI bias - Digital Journal

#artificialintelligence

Researchers have called upon the community of ethical hackers to work together to help prevent the looming'crisis of trust' that is set to impact artificial intelligence. Specifically, the researchers are putting forward the need fora global hacker'red team', macheted by the incentive of rewards, for hunting algorithmic biases. This type of activity is needed to help reduce the so-termed'tech-lash' that artificial intelligence faces unless firm measures are taken to increase public trust. The reason for proposing this issue is because technology sector is facing concerns that underpin advances in artificial intelligence, such as the progress with driverless cars and autonomous drones. There is also concern with aspects like social media algorithms that spread misinformation and provoke political turmoil.

World Customs Organization

The event attracted more than 700 attendees and provided insights into how advanced technologies can help Customs administrations facilitate the flow of goods across borders. The publication titled, "The role of advanced technologies in cross-border trade: A customs perspective" provides the current state of play and sheds light on the opportunities and challenges Customs face when deploying these technologies. The publication outlines the key findings of WCO's 2021 Annual Consolidated Survey and its results on Customs' use of advanced technologies such as blockchain, the internet of things, data analytics and artificial intelligence to facilitate trade and enhance safety, security and fair revenue collection. The joint publication highlights the benefits that can result from the adoption of these advanced technologies, such as enhanced transparency of procedures, sharing of information amongst all relevant stakeholders in real time, better risk management, and improved data quality, leading to greater efficiency in Customs processes and procedures. In his remarks, WCO Deputy Secretary General Ricardo Treviño Chapa said, "Technologies will assist implementation of international trade facilitation rules and standards, such as the WCO Revised Kyoto Convention and the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement. We are therefore delighted to be partnering with the WTO, to ensure that our work in assisting our Members' digital transformation journeys is complementary, that we bring all relevant partners to the same table, and that we avoid duplication."
