It may sound like something straight out of Star Wars, but Hyundai's planned'walking car' is a step closer to reality after the vehicle manufacturer unveiled a new $20 million (£16 million) development centre to expedite its arrival. The aim of the New Horizon Studio, which has opened in Montana in the US, is to build vehicles for future customers who want or need to travel over terrains which are challenging for conventional ground vehicles. It will focus on the development of Ultimate Mobility Vehicles (UMVs), including a car with legs that can simply walk over anything it struggles to drive over. The Elevate concept, which resembles the All Terrain Armoured Transport (AT-AT) walkers found in the Star Wars universe, combines a traditional wheel with a leg that unfolds for dangerous terrain. Michelob Ultra and ESPN have decided to use AI to answer an enduring question: what would happen if tennis legend John McEnroe played against himself? An upcoming ESPN special entitled "McEnroe vs. McEnroe" will feature the 63-year-old star, who retired from singles competition in 1992, playing against a complicated, AI-trained version of himself. According to TechCrunch, the process for the actual game is fairly involved. After the real McEnroe sends a ball over the net, the AI avatar responds to its direction and "swings" -- at this point, a new ball is launched from a ball cannon, which is obscured by a smokescreen. The positioning of the ball cannon and smokescreen are designed to make the ball appear as if it's coming off the avatar's racket.

Modern machine-learning models, such as neural networks, are often referred to as "black boxes" because they are so complex that even the researchers who design them can't fully understand how they make predictions. To provide some insights, researchers use explanation methods that seek to describe individual model decisions. For example, they may highlight words in a movie review that influenced the model's decision that the review was positive. But these explanation methods don't do any good if humans can't easily understand them, or even misunderstand them. So, MIT researchers created a mathematical framework to formally quantify and evaluate the understandability of explanations for machine-learning models.

Though techno-thriller The Circle (2017) is more a comment on the ethical implications of social networks than the practicalities of external video analytics, the improbably tiny'SeeChange' camera at the center of the plot is what truly pushes the movie into the'science-fiction' category. A wireless and free-roaming device about the size of a large marble, it's not the lack of solar panels or the inefficiency of drawing power from other ambient sources (such as radio waves) that makes SeeChange an unlikely prospect, but the fact that it's going to have to compress video 24/7, on whatever scant charge it's able to maintain. Powering cheap sensors of this type is a core area of research in computer vision (CV) and video analytics, particularly in non-urban environments where the sensor will have to eke out the maximum performance from very limited power resources (batteries, solar, etc.). In cases where such an edge IoT/CV device of this type must send image content to a central server (often through conventional cell coverage networks), the choices are hard: either the device needs to run some kind of lightweight neural network locally in order to send only optimized segments of relevant data for server side processing; or it has to send'dumb' video for the plugged-in cloud resources to evaluate. Though motion-activation through event-based Smart Vision Sensors (SVS) can cut down this overhead, that activation monitoring also costs energy.

Sonos may roll out its own voice assistant next month

It seems Sonos is gearing up to roll out its own long-rumored voice assistant in the coming weeks. Sonos Voice is said to offer voice control for music playback on many of the company's devices, offering owners another option if they'd rather not use Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Sonos will first roll out Sonos Voice in the US on June 1st as part of a software update, according to The Verge. The feature should arrive in other countries later. A rumored $250 soundbar called Sonos Ray will likely be among those.
