Researchers at the University of Rochester Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences have developed a web-based system called BachDuet that allows users to improvise duets with an artificial intelligence (AI) counterpart in real time. By visiting the BachDuet website, users can play duets with the AI agent using a computer keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, or MIDI keyboard. To play a duet with German composer Johann Sebastian Bach, you don't have to travel back to the 18th century; thanks to a new program developed by researchers at the University of Rochester, you only need a computer. The web-based program, called BachDuet, was developed by Zhiyao Duan, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and of computer science, and members of his lab, including Yongi Zang '23 and PhD student Christodoulos Benetatos. BachDuet allows a person to improvise duets in the style of Bach with an artificial intelligence (AI) counterpoint in real time.

For part of the lecture, I was preparing discussions surrounding AI and the future of work. I wanted to discuss how execution of different professional tasks were changing with technology, and what that means for the future of certain industries or occupational areas. I wanted to underline that some tasks like repetitive transactions, large scale iterations, standard rule applications are better done with AI – as long as they were the right solution for the context and problem, and were developed responsibly and monitored continuously. On the flip side, certain skills and tasks that include leading, empathizing, creating are to be left to humans – AI systems neither have the capacity or capability, nor should they be entrusted with such tasks. I wanted to add some visuals to the presentation and also check out what is currently being depicted in the search results.

In selecting honorees for this year's list, Forbes' 12-judge panel of experts in artificial intelligence from the fields of academia, technology, and venture capital evaluated hundreds of submissions, handpicking the top 50 most compelling companies.

It's not often I have a lot to say about a game's menu options, but I have to give credit where credit is due: "The Quarry's" UI is an impeccably tailored and delightful nostalgia trip. Slasher films saw their heyday in the late '70s and '80s, and Supermassive Games fully commits to that aesthetic. The starting screen menu mimics a chunky desktop from the early days of computer graphics. Each of the branching paths shaped by the player's choices -- the equivalent of the Butterfly Effect mechanic in "Until Dawn" -- is represented by a VHS tape with a unique cover in the style of vintage horror movie posters. Several have stickers slapped on top: price tags and reminders to "Be kind and rewind!"

Artificial Intelligence is the technical story of 2010 decade. Over the past decade, machines that are indeed considered "intelligent" – capable of thinking, learning and performing like humans – have begun to become a reality outside of science fiction. Among the many concerns that AI raises is the possibility of wiping out a large portion of the human workforce by eliminating the need for manual labour. But it will simultaneously liberate humans from having to perform tedious, repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on more complex and rewarding projects, or simply take some much-needed time off.
