'Minority Report' at 20: Which Tech Predictions Were Accurate?

#artificialintelligence

Steven Spielberg's 2002 sci-fi thriller "Minority Report," in which Tom Cruise is the captain of a state-of-the-art "Precrime" law enforcement division, is still a touchstone for new tech: Self-driving cars are (kind of) here, but we're still waiting on flying cars, jetpacks and more innovations like the ones Spielberg's futurist think tank dreamed up. Here are some of the tech predictions the movie, which was based on the 1956 short story by legendary sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick, got right and some of the things it failed to foresee about the future.

Towards Unified Conversational Recommender Systems via Knowledge-Enhanced Prompt Learning

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Conversational recommender systems (CRS) aim to proactively elicit user preference and recommend high-quality items through natural language conversations. Typically, a CRS consists of a recommendation module to predict preferred items for users and a conversation module to generate appropriate responses. To develop an effective CRS, it is essential to seamlessly integrate the two modules. Existing works either design semantic alignment strategies, or share knowledge resources and representations between the two modules. However, these approaches still rely on different architectures or techniques to develop the two modules, making it difficult for effective module integration. To address this problem, we propose a unified CRS model named UniCRS based on knowledge-enhanced prompt learning. Our approach unifies the recommendation and conversation subtasks into the prompt learning paradigm, and utilizes knowledge-enhanced prompts based on a fixed pre-trained language model (PLM) to fulfill both subtasks in a unified approach. In the prompt design, we include fused knowledge representations, task-specific soft tokens, and the dialogue context, which can provide sufficient contextual information to adapt the PLM for the CRS task. Besides, for the recommendation subtask, we also incorporate the generated response template as an important part of the prompt, to enhance the information interaction between the two subtasks. Extensive experiments on two public CRS datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach.

Reddit Bans 'SFW' Deepfake Group - Channel969

#artificialintelligence

Over the weekend, apparently someday round Sunday, Reddit banned the nominally'SFW' (Protected For Work) deepfakes neighborhood titled r/deepfakesfw. The subreddit was one of many early responses to the social media large's immediate deletion of the unique, AI-porn-ridden r/deepfakes sub in 2018. The (comparatively) boiler-plate legend that now greets (archive snapshot taken Monday, June 13) anybody visiting the sub explains that it'was banned attributable to a violation of Reddit's guidelines towards involuntary pornography'. The r/deepfakesfw sub was not continuously archived by well-liked conservation platforms, however essentially the most latest WayBack Machine snapshot, taken round ten days in the past (on third June 2022), signifies that the sub had 3,095 readers at the moment. That's truly a better variety of subscribers than r/DeepFakesSFW (word the additional's'), which presently has 2,827 readers (archive snapshot taken Monday, June 13, 2022).

What is generative artificial intelligence (AI)?

#artificialintelligence

We are excited to bring Transform 2022 back in-person July 19 and virtually July 20 - 28. Join AI and data leaders for insightful talks and exciting networking opportunities. Many artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are used to classify, organize or reason about data. Generative algorithms create data using models of the world to synthesize images, sounds and videos that often look increasingly realistic. The algorithms begin with models of what a world must be like and then they create a simulated world that fits the model. Generative AIs are frequently found in various content creation roles.

AI Must Have a Cruciform Ethic

#artificialintelligence

What follows is a thought experiment that, I believe, is a reality we all are going to face pretty soon. Upon some consideration, I believe these ethical principles include absolute non-violence even with respect to acts of micro-violence or what I would call meekness. Below, I will expand upon what I am contending is a necessary ethical framework that will need to be coded into the AI mind if humanity is to protect ourselves from the powers of our own creation. Recent discussions about sentience is a distraction from what is at issue. Could we write a software that can gather data and learn?
