Brian and Charles Imagines an Optimistic Future for AI
In the era of robot dogs and jocked-up AI machines doing shudder-inducing feats of parkour, sometimes it's comforting to consider a potential future where bots are just warm, squishy friends, or--better yet--a future where they all look like Charles from Brian and Charles. Standing about 7 feet tall and with a boxy abdomen that's made of what seems to be a washing machine, Charles trots around the Welsh countryside like a newborn foal, as content with a plate of boiled cabbage as most of us would be with a seven-course dinner. His creation comes when Brian (played by writer David Earl), experiencing a bout of depression, decides to take a wack at inventing something new. Lightning strikes--perhaps literally--and Brian and Charles' lives are changed forever. As Brian and Charles hits cinemas, WIRED caught up with Earl and cowriter Chris Hayward to talk about optimism, character comedy, and how the pair worked to find the intersection of American Movie and AI.
The Invention of the Trans Novel
If you spend time around transgender people, you may notice, on badges and buttons, on sewn patches, or even as a tattoo, the sigil "T4T," or "t4t." The characters stand for "trans for trans," and the usage began as shorthand on dating sites. Imogen Binnie's "Nevada" might be, in that extended, contentious sense, the first t4t novel. Published in 2013 by the trans-focussed (and now defunct) Topside Press, and just reissued by the mainstream trade publisher Farrar, Straus & Giroux, "Nevada" is hardly the first novel about trans characters, or the first by a trans author for the queer community--Leslie Feinberg got there in 1993, with "Stone Butch Blues." Still, "Nevada" seemed to be the first book-length realist novel about trans women, in American English, with an ISBN on it, that was not only written by one of us but written for us.

This project's primary objective is to ensure that the responses of Google's Artificial Intelligence in conversations transcend the automatic responses that characterize bots, for instance, and that different topics can be covered and a dialogue can progress naturally.
Reddit to acquire Spell, a machine learning platform
Reddit announced it would buy Spell, a platform for running machine learning (ML) experiments, for an undisclosed amount. Spell, founded in 2016 by Serkan Piantino, a former Facebook engineer, provides cloud computing solutions to allow anyone to run resource-heavy ML experiments without the high-end hardware that would typically be necessary. The firm defines its mission as pursuing the best possible platform for anyone looking to develop robust, reliable, and safe software using AI and ML. The social media platform Reddit currently uses ML for the Discover Tab and personalized recommendations. The firm also leverages the technology for its targeted advertising and safety work.

Dall-E Mini lets you type a short phrase describing an image, one that theoretically exists only in the deep recesses of your soul, and within a few seconds, the algorithm will manifest that image onto your screen. Odds are you've seen some Dall-E Mini images popping up in your social media feeds as people think of the wildest prompts they can -- perhaps it's Jon Hamm eating ham, or Yoda robbing a convenience store. This isn't the first time art and artificial intelligence have captured the internet's attention. There's a certain appeal to seeing how an algorithm tackles something as subjective as art.
Robotics expert Robin Murphy explains why 'Star Wars' robots don't reflect reality
Robotics is a smoking-hot industry that's evolving by literal leaps and bounds, and the top researchers in the field are also some of sci-fi's geekiest fans. Robin Murphy, the Raytheon professor of computer science and engineering at Texas A&M University, specializes in artificial intelligence for robotics. As a component of her curriculum, she writes "Science Fiction, Science Fact," a series of provocative, engaging articles that highlight the myriad differences between the robots and droids depicted in popular science fiction films and the best sci-fi TV shows and actual robots and autonomous machines working in the real world. Although "The Mandalorian" and "The Book of Boba Fett" excel in depicting visually arresting Star Wars droids, their mechanical designs are not only impractical but often no match for real robots, Murphy explained in a column in the journal Science Robotics (opens in new tab). In addition to being one of the finest minds in robotics, she's the distinguished author of several MIT Press books on the topic, including "Robotics Through Science Fiction (opens in new tab)" (2018), "Introduction to AI Robotics (opens in new tab)" (2001, 2018) and "Disaster Robotics (opens in new tab)" (2014).
