SwRI scientists demonstrate machine learning tool to efficiently process complex solar data
Solar flares, coronal mass ejections, prominences and sunspots are all driven by complex magnetic activity within the Sun's interior and at its surface, illustrated by the ultraviolet image on the right. SAN ANTONIO -- July 6, 2022 --Big data has become a big challenge for space scientists analyzing vast datasets from increasingly powerful space instrumentation. To address this, a Southwest Research Institute team has developed a machine learning tool to efficiently label large, complex datasets to allow deep learning models to sift through and identify potentially hazardous solar events. The new labeling tool can be applied or adapted to address other challenges involving vast datasets. As space instrument packages collect increasingly complex data in ever-increasing volumes, it is becoming more challenging for scientists to process and analyze relevant trends.

But for many years now, the term has been a major part of the technologists' lexicon. To many they are art's next big thing -- digital images of jellyfish pulsing and blurring in a dark pink sea, or dozens of butterflies fusing together into a single organism. The Argentine artist Sofia Crespo, who created the works with the help of artificial intelligence, is part of the "generative art" movement, where humans create rules for computers which then use algorithms to generate new forms, ideas and patterns. The field has begun to attract huge interest among art collectors -- and even bigger price tags at auction. US artist and programmer Robbie Barrat -- a prodigy still only 22 years old -- sold a work called "Nude Portrait#7Frame#64" at Sotheby's in March for £630,000 ($821,000). That came almost four years after French collective Obvious sold a work at Christie's titled "Edmond de Belamy" -- largely based on Barrat's code -- for $432,500.
Word Embedding for Social Sciences: An Interdisciplinary Survey

To extract essential information from complex data, computer scientists have been developing machine learning models that learn low-dimensional representation mode. From such advances in machine learning research, not only computer scientists but also social scientists have benefited and advanced their research because human behavior or social phenomena lies in complex data. To document this emerging trend, we survey the recent studies that apply word embedding techniques to human behavior mining, building a taxonomy to illustrate the methods and procedures used in the surveyed papers and highlight the recent emerging trends applying word embedding models to non-textual human behavior data. This survey conducts a simple experiment to warn that common similarity measurements used in the literature could yield different results even if they return consistent results at an aggregate level.
Privacy-Preserving Synthetic Educational Data Generation

Institutions collect massive learning traces but they may not disclose it for privacy issues. Synthetic data generation opens new opportunities for research in education. In this paper we present a generative model for educational data that can preserve the privacy of participants, and an evaluation framework for comparing synthetic data generators. We show how naive pseudonymization can lead to re-identification threats and suggest techniques to guarantee privacy. We evaluate our method on existing massive educational open datasets.
"Both Sides of the Blade," Reviewed: Claire Denis's Politics of Privacy
Claire Denis's recent collaborations with the actress Juliette Binoche have all been modernist twists on classic genres, starting with "Let the Sunshine In," a screwball comedy, and "High Life," a work of science fiction. The latest, "Both Sides of the Blade," which opens Friday, is a romantic melodrama; it lays bare the societal circumstances that play a decisive role in a middle-aged couple's life together, and it does so without stinting on direct and passionate emotional expression. If melodrama is the art of exaggeration, presenting the lives of everyday people in the terms and the tone of tragedy, Denis approaches the genre as the art of democratic authenticity, of truth. She treats her characters' story like a mirror for the earnestness and the dignity with which they view themselves, and she displays the public conditions, the web of power and authority, that get in the way--and that are nonetheless inseparable from the way that they see themselves. There's something Edenic about the romance of Sara (Binoche) and Jean (Vincent Lindon), who are first seen frolicking and intertwining, playfully and passionately, in the sumptuous isolation of the sea.
