Reid Blackman, PhD, is the author of Ethical Machines: Your Concise Guide to Totally Unbiased, Transparent, and Respectful AI (Harvard Business Review Press), Founder and CEO of Virtue, an AI ethical risk consultancy, and he volunteers as the Chief Ethics Officer for the non-profit Government Blockchain Association. He has also been a Senior Advisor to the Deloitte AI Institute, a Founding Member of Ernst & Young's AI Advisory Board, and sits on the advisory boards of several start-ups. His work has been profiled in The Wall Street Journal and Forbes and he has presented his work to dozens of organizations including Citibank, the FBI, the World Economic Forum, and AWS. Reid's expertise is relied upon by Fortune 500 companies to educate and train their people and to guide them as they create and scale AI ethical risk programs.

The Earth Species Project (ESP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to decoding animal communication and translating non-human language. ESP partners with biologists and machine learning researchers at universities and institutions around the world and we are honored to be supported by many forward-looking philanthropists and groups, including the Internet Archive, TED Audacious 2020, and the entrepreneur and author Reid Hoffman. Our work has been featured on NPR's Invisibilia documentary, "Two Heart Beats a Minute," "How to Talk to Animals" in Wall Street Journal's The Future of Everything, "The Challenges of Animal Translation" in the New Yorker, published in Scientific Reports, and was honored at the inaugural Anthem Awards. One Node at a Time: Node-Level Network Classification

Network classification aims to group networks (or graphs) into distinct categories based on their structure. We study the connection between classification of a network and of its constituent nodes, and whether nodes from networks in different groups are distinguishable based on structural node characteristics such as centrality and clustering coefficient. We demonstrate, using various network datasets and random network models, that a classifier can be trained to accurately predict the network category of a given node (without seeing the whole network), implying that complex networks display distinct structural patterns even at the node level. Finally, we discuss two applications of node-level network classification: (i) whole-network classification from small samples of nodes, and (ii) network bootstrapping.


Evaluating and improving social awareness of energy communities through semantic network analysis of online news

The implementation of energy communities represents a cross-disciplinary phenomenon that has the potential to support the energy transition while fostering citizens' participation throughout the energy system and their exploitation of renewables. An important role is played by online information sources in engaging people in this process and increasing their awareness of associated benefits. In this view, this work analyses online news data on energy communities to understand people's awareness and the media importance of this topic. We use the Semantic Brand Score (SBS) indicator as an innovative measure of semantic importance, combining social network analysis and text mining methods. Results show different importance trends for energy communities and other energy and society-related topics, also allowing the identification of their connections. Our approach gives evidence to information gaps and possible actions that could be taken to promote a low-carbon energy transition.

The rapper Snoop Dogg's avatars NFT The Doggies, World of Women, and People of Crypto are now live in the new Avatar section of the Marketplace, according to a tweet from The Sandbox. The 10,000 Snoop Dogg avatars were created using a computer and are voxelated NFTs with over 150 features. Users may use each cool Doggie avatar in the game's second season to go to events and concerts, finish tasks, hang out with friends, and explore the metaverse like a celebrity. Ragnarok has been introduced to metaverse thanks to an agreement that The Sandbox reached with the gaming business Gravity. The popular MMORPG Ragnarok Online was released in 2002.

An Image is Worth One Word: Personalizing Text-to-Image Generation using Textual Inversion

Text-to-image models offer unprecedented freedom to guide creation through natural language. Yet, it is unclear how such freedom can be exercised to generate images of specific unique concepts, modify their appearance, or compose them in new roles and novel scenes. In other words, we ask: how can we use language-guided models to turn our cat into a painting, or imagine a new product based on our favorite toy? Here we present a simple approach that allows such creative freedom. Using only 3-5 images of a user-provided concept, like an object or a style, we learn to represent it through new "words" in the embedding space of a frozen text-to-image model. These "words" can be composed into natural language sentences, guiding personalized creation in an intuitive way. Notably, we find evidence that a single word embedding is sufficient for capturing unique and varied concepts. We compare our approach to a wide range of baselines, and demonstrate that it can more faithfully portray the concepts across a range of applications and tasks.
